Polystyrene glue has two types: one for disposable products like diapers and another for construction projects like insulated walls. Both types have unique properties that make them popular for their intended purposes. The glue is made from a styrene monomer and has solvent retardant qualities. Polystyrene is a hard plastic used for everyday objects like toy cars and foam insulation.

There are several types of glue for polystyrene, an adhesive form of polystyrene. One type is used in disposable products such as diapers. Another type is used for construction projects. Both types have unique properties that make them popular for their intended purposes.
A type of polystyrene glue is used in disposable products. This type is used in diapers, incontinence pads, feminine pads or bed pads. The polystyrene adhesive is heated to melt prior to application and used to join components together, but can easily be disposed of afterwards. The substance has sufficient resistance to flow property, high bond strength and controllable viscosity which allows for a wide range of elastic bonding, extrusion and even spray adhesive application such as polystyrene foam spray adhesive. Items made with this type of polystyrene adhesive usually consist of a fabric or non-woven fabric, sheet, fabric or elastic band that is adhered to a certain substrate using this glue.

Another type of polystyrene glue is used for a wide variety of construction purposes. The adhesive can be found in the construction of insulated walls. In addition to the walls being made of strips of fur, styrofoam panels and wire mesh which is stapled onto these same styrofoam panels, styrofoam glue is applied to the butt joints of the panel and sealed. The stapling and gluing process can be time consuming, but it ensures that all of the insulation adheres and stays together in the wall construction. Glue and Styrofoam panels are thermally expansive, so they can be assembled into small pieces for easier replacement.

Most often, polystyrene glue is made from a styrene monomer which is an effective solvent in combination with polystyrene. The consistency of the monomer in the glue can range between 80% and 99% as it is modified with a retardant, most often stearate. Polystyrene glue has solvent retardant qualities, which accommodates incised, worn joints and non-continuous surfaces. The glue is fluid and can be used with a dropper, syringe or dip. After the glue is applied, it has a low surface tension and flows between 1 and 2 inches from the point of application.

Styrofoam is a hard plastic that is inexpensive to make and is used for many common objects in everyday life. It is part of a group of polymers called vinyl polymers, which consist of very long hydrocarbon chains with carbon atoms attached to every other phenyl group. Toy cars and model airplanes can be made from polystyrene, and foam insulation and packaging are made from polystyrene in foam form. The substance can also be used in rubbers and adhesives due to its flexibility and chemical properties. Most often, this glue is used for construction purposes, in individual parts of a house such as ceiling tiles or disposable items such as diapers.
