Vegan frosting recipes avoid animal products like eggs, milk, and butter. Fat, sugar, and milk are common ingredients, but substitutes like nut butters, vegan margarine, and soy milk can be used. Popular vegan frosting types include buttercream, chocolate, and cream cheese, and can be customized with various flavors and ingredients.

After cooking tasty vegan cakes, the icing can be used to complement the dish by enhancing the flavors and acting as an attractive decoration. Unlike traditional frosting, vegan frosting recipes avoid the use of eggs, milk, butter, cream, honey, and other animal by-products. While vegan frostings don’t use these ingredients, they absolutely don’t have to be unappealing or boring. There are many different types of vegan frosting, including buttercream, chocolate, and cream cheese.

Fat, sugar, and milk are the three most common ingredients included in frosting recipes. The fat found in the glaze usually comes from butter. Strict vegans don’t consume dairy products, however. An acceptable alternative is nut butters, vegan margarine, or shortening. Since margarine may contain traces of dairy products, users should read the label for mention of lactose or whey to ensure the product is completely vegan-friendly.

While sugar does not contain any animal by-products, white sugar can be filtered using animal bones. To avoid the problem, vegans may choose to use unbleached brown sugar, maple syrup or corn syrup. Dairy milk can usually be substituted for soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, or other alternatives without a major change in the texture or flavor of the vegan frosting.

With the basic ingredients down, you can create a vegan glaze that complements any type of vegan menu. There are dozens of different vegan frostings that can be made. Some of the more popular plain frostings include buttercream, chocolate, and cream cheese.

The buttercream frosting features a thick, smooth texture that makes it ideal for piping onto cupcakes, and the soft texture spreads easily over vegan cookies. A basic vegan buttercream frosting blends soy milk with vegan margarine for a fluffy texture. A flavoring extract and powdered sugar provide flavor and sweetness.

Chocolate icing is often used to compliment a vegan chocolate cake or brownie. To prepare the chocolate glaze, butter is mixed with melted chocolate chips or cocoa powder, then almond extract and soy milk are added. To sweeten the icing, you can use agave syrup or maple syrup.

The vegan cream cheese frosting has a tart sweetness suitable for carrot or spice cakes. As a substitute for dairy products, vegan cream cheeses are made with a tofu or almond base. Vanilla flavoring, icing sugar and a vegan margarine blend into the cream cheese.

When making a vegan dessert, the ingredients used can be varied based on the items at hand. Simple vegan frostings can be adapted to fit different types of vegan desserts by folding in fresh mint, vanilla bean paste, strawberries, blueberries, shredded coconut, chopped nuts, or crushed vegan cookies.
