Workplace harassment can take many forms, including targeting individuals based on their gender, race, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion, political beliefs, or national origin. Sexual harassment is a common form, but all types of harassment can result in negative job consequences or even job loss. Harassment can include verbal or physical behavior that degrades an employee or refuses to hire or promote them based on personal characteristics.

There are many types of harassment that can occur in the workplace. Types of workplace harassment include unwelcome and disturbing behavior directed against a person based on a characteristic such as gender, race, or age. Other types may target an individual or group of employees based on sexual orientation, age, or disability. Workplace harassment can also be of a type that targets an individual based on religion, political beliefs, or national origin.

More commonly referred to as workplace harassment, many forms of workplace harassment are illegal, especially if the harassment is based on the victim’s race, religion, or gender. In the case of workplace harassment, the victim feels that getting hired or promoted is conditional on submitting to the unwanted behavior. A person can also be a victim, not being the direct target of the harassment, but being forced to witness it.

Sexual harassment is one of the most recognized forms of workplace harassment. Sexual harassment involves unwanted sexual advances or behavior in the workplace. The focus of the harassment appears that refusing to submit to the behavior will result in negative job consequences or possible job loss.

Workplace harassment can also take the form of verbal or physical behavior that is intended to degrade an employee because of sexual or gender orientation. It may also be that an employer refuses to hire or promote or fires an individual based on that person’s gender or sexual orientation.

Harassment based on a person’s race, ethnicity, or color is another type of professional harassment. The perpetrator of the harassment may engage in behavior that verbally or physically degrades the victim based on these personal characteristics. As with harassment based on gender and sexual orientation, this type of harassment can include a refusal to hire or promote, or even fire, someone based on race.

Another type of professional harassment is that which is based on the individual’s chosen religion. The way harassment is carried out is often similar to that of other types of harassment. With this type, it can also include forcing an employee to attend religious services of another faith or attempting to convert the employee to a different faith. As with other types, the victim feels compelled to submit to the behavior in order to remain employed.
