Upgrading a computer’s RAM can improve its speed. To do this, purchase a RAM module specific to the computer, use an anti-static wrist strap, and follow instructions to insert it correctly. Check the manual or websites for guidance on type and order of installation.
When a computer is running slowly, it is likely to need more memory or RAM. Computers are sold with about a quarter of the computer’s RAM they can support. Upgrading your computer’s RAM can be done by a beginner, as it doesn’t require any technical knowledge. All you need is a RAM module, specific to your computer, an anti-static wrist strap and a screwdriver.
The first step in upgrading your computer’s RAM is to learn what type of module you need, then purchase it. You can find out what type of RAM you need by consulting your computer’s manual. If you no longer have the manual handy, you can check online at the Crucial or Kingston sites.
Turn off the computer and disconnect the main power. Use a non-magnetic screwdriver to loosen the screws and open the computer case. While it’s not guaranteed to happen, a magnetic screwdriver can destroy sensitive computer components. It’s not worth the risk. If a screw is attracted to the tip of the screwdriver, it is magnetic.
Before installing RAM in your computer, you’ll need to ground yourself with an anti-static wrist strap. This will prevent the static electricity produced from discharging and damaging the computer circuitry. Wrap the anti-static strap around your wrist and attach the other end to your computer case. Anti-static wrist straps are sold at any store that sells computer components.
Check your computer manual or the Crucial or Kingston websites to determine the order in which to fill the RAM sockets, as the order varies by computer brand. If inserted in the wrong order, the computer may not recognize the added RAM. If you need to remove a RAM module, push down on the clips located on each side of the socket.
Hold the new RAM module by the thin edges. Press and hold the clips on the sides of the module sockets and insert the RAM into the computer by aligning the recess on the module with the extrusion on the socket. Push in the RAM module until it clicks.
Replace the cover on the computer case. Plug your computer into an electrical outlet and turn it on. If the computer’s new RAM is installed correctly, it will register on the monitor. If it wasn’t recognized, you’ll need to go into the CMOS installer and tell the computer what to look for. This is done by following the instructions that appear on the screen.
