US Dept. of Education: What’s its role?

The US Department of Education collects data from schools to identify areas of need and creates education policies at the federal level. It disburses federal funds and enforces federal education laws, primarily focused on discrimination. However, education is primarily a state responsibility, and the department can only provide assistance when needed and enforce federal laws as permitted by federal or state law.

The United States Department of Education is a cabinet-level organization of that country’s government, responsible for creating education policy at the federal level. It does this by gathering information from schools across the nation to distinguish which areas of need. Once these have been identified, it is the department’s job to bring them to national attention. In addition to this, the education department is also responsible for disbursing federal funds allocated to education and enforcing federal education laws.

Compiling data and conducting research in schools across the country is one of the most important tasks of the US Department of Education. This is because clearly defined objectives must exist before policy is created and funds are disbursed, and the creation of these objectives depends on areas of need.

Once the data is collected, this organization must find areas where federal help is needed. Once identified, it is the organization’s job to bring them national attention. This awareness is important because, in a democracy, the public interest is needed to create laws. The department usually draws attention to problems through the media. Articles are written, speeches are made, and national conferences are held to attract public interest.

In the United States, the president’s cabinet is a group of advisers who help him create the public policy that will be associated with his administration. Since the US Department of Education is a cabinet-level organization, it must shape the nation’s education policy based on its research and data. The policies created are then used to shape federal education laws and programs.

Another important duty of the Department of Education is to enforce federal laws associated with education. These focus primarily on discrimination by school districts based on race, national origin, gender, disability, and age. If someone is denied equal educational services due to any of these factors, it is the duty of the federal government to intervene.

While this department was created to help states improve student achievement, it also has limitations. The Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution states that all powers not mentioned in that document are reserved for the states. As education is not listed there, it is up to each state to develop its own educational standards. This includes creating curricula, schools, administrations, enrollment requirements and much more. The United States Department of Education must provide assistance only when needed and enforce federal laws, unless otherwise permitted by federal or state law.
