The US has the potential to generate four times its energy needs through offshore wind energy, but it remains largely untapped. 26 states have usable winds. Offshore wind energy has potential to meet five times the world’s energy consumption, but some environmental groups are concerned about damage to ecosystems. Denmark and Ireland are among the countries regularly using offshore wind energy.
The United States has enough offshore wind energy potential to meet four times its energy needs. Although the United States has the largest onshore wind energy capacity, its offshore wind energy is almost entirely untapped. Usable winds exist off the coasts of 26 states.

In theory, the amount of potential wind energy in the world would amount to more than five times the world’s energy consumption, if harnessed.
Although the use of offshore wind energy is “green” in terms of energy, some environmental groups argue that installing the necessary equipment would seriously damage ecosystems in the area of wind farms.
More than 80 countries make regular use of offshore wind energy, including Denmark, where wind energy is responsible for about one-fifth of all stationary electricity produced annually, and Ireland, which produced about one-sixth of its electricity from offshore wind power in 2009.
