USB Stereo Adapter: What is it?

A USB stereo adapter connects to USB-compatible devices, enabling stereo sound and often has ports for headphones and microphones. It provides high-speed data transfer and is a popular choice for connecting devices. It can replace a broken sound card and improve headphone sound quality. Wireless and Bluetooth® versions are available.

A USB stereo adapter is a device that connects to a computer or any other device with Universal Serial Bus (USB) capability and enables stereo sound while playing audio. Most USB stereo adapters have ports for both headphones and microphones. Speakers with stereo capabilities can also generally be plugged into the headphone jack if they have the correct type of plug. Wireless and Bluetooth® versions of the USB Stereo Adapter are also available.

USB technology was originally released in the mid-1990s by Intel® Corporation. It is used to connect peripheral accessories or other devices to USB compatible devices, usually a computer. USB was designed as a response to the technology available at the time which, unlike USB, was slower and more difficult to set up. Adapters that use USB connections are generally plug and play, meaning you don’t need to do any device drivers or additional configuration once connected.

Using a USB adapter provides relatively high speed; most USB connections move data at speeds of up to 480 megabits per second (Mbps). Most computers and some devices, such as cell phones and MP3 players, have multiple USB ports. It’s a quick and easy way to connect a USB compatible device, such as a hard drive or monitor, to a computer or other device. While typically not as fast a connection as internally configured interfaces, at least where computers are concerned, the speed and ease of use make USB a popular choice.

Using a USB stereo adapter allows computers or other USB-compatible devices to generate a stereo signal for USB-compatible devices. A common reason for its use is as a replacement for a sound card. Normally, a computer has a sound card which is connected to the computer’s motherboard; the sound card allows for expansive, amplified sound. If this breaks or malfunctions, the USB stereo adapter is an easy and cheap alternative for high-quality sound.

Another key benefit of using a USB stereo adapter is that it can improve the sound of headphones. Most computers and devices have a specific non-USB socket for headphones, but the sound quality is often weak and sometimes does not offer stereo functionality, which the USB adapter does. Having the port for a microphone also gives you the option of stereo quality input.

With the advent of wireless technology and Bluetooth®, USB stereo adapters can offer a neat and simple solution for using stereo speakers and headphones. Using the adapter, audio from a computer or other device can be routed to wireless or Bluetooth® speakers or even an entire stereo system. Wireless headphones are also available, which can be a big plus, as there are no cables keeping the listener in one place.
