Suspenders, also known as braces in British English, are straps that hold up pants and can be attached with buttons or clips. They come in different materials, colors, and lengths and are available at specialty clothing stores. Suspenders were traditionally clipped onto buttons attached to pants, but modern versions are fully elasticated. They are worn for formal occasions or by workers to prevent their pants from falling down.

Suspenders are a clothing accessory designed to hold up a pair of trousers or pants. They consist of a set of straps that are placed over the shoulders and attached to the pants with buttons or clips. The pants are literally suspended from these straps, which explains the origin of the name. In British English, they are known as braces, as they could be said to support or support a pair of trousers. Although suspenders are not widely used anymore, they are available at men’s supply stores and other specialty clothing stores, depending on your desired style.

At the front of the body, the straps of a pair of suspenders travel directly down from the shoulders, to be attached to the pant with clips or to be buttoned, depending on the pant’s design. In the back, they are often crossed, to provide more stability and prevent them from slipping off the shoulders. Sometimes a Y shape is made, connecting the straps to form a single strap that joins in the middle of the back of the pants. Either way, the suspenders are elasticated and typically include buckles so they can be adjusted to fit the wearer.

Modern suspenders are usually fully elasticated. The more formal ones may be made of stiffer materials with elasticated tabs for some flexibility of movement. In addition to elastics, they can be made from strong cotton material and leather in a variety of colors. They come in different base lengths to accommodate a wide range of bodies, from short to very tall men. Some companies also make gag suspenders, printed with bright, fun patterns.

Garters were popular during the 19th century and were worn by all men. Belts were worn ornamentally, on the outside of clothing and coats, while suspenders did the job of holding up pants. These traditional versions were designed to clip onto buttons attached to pants. This changed in 1894, when David Roth filed a patent for fastening suspenders, rather than those that fastened directly to pants.

The popularity of suspenders waxed and waned during the 20th century. Modern suspenders generally fall into two categories: very formal dress suspenders, designed to be buttoned to pants as part of a white tie outfit, or basic work suspenders worn by farmers, plumbers, and carpenters. This prevents the worker’s pants from falling down, even with loaded pockets and a full tool belt.
