Bread makers use paddles to mix and knead dough before baking. It’s important to use the correct size and shape of paddles to avoid damage to the machine or poorly mixed dough. The paddles are baked into the bread and leave a small hole in the bottom.
The automation of bread baking has made it much easier to produce fresh homemade bread easily. The ingredients are put into the machine, a few hours later a hot, fresh loaf comes out. The machine has various components that are part of the process. Among the most important of these are the bread machine paddles. These fit in the bottom of the bread maker and are the tools that mix the ingredients and knead the dough before it cooks.
Each different type of bread maker has its own unique type of bread maker paddles. These palettes are slightly different in shape, but all have the same general characteristics. They consist of a single elongated arm, usually made of sturdy metal, tall and wide enough to mix and knead dough in the machine. The bread maker plates can be removed for cleaning.
It is important to use the appropriate plates when using a bread maker so that the dough is mixed well and the maker is not damaged. Breadmaker paddles need to be large enough to thoroughly mix the bread dough in the machine. If they don’t reach close enough to the sides of the pan, some of the flour and other ingredients may not combine properly. Conversely, if the paddles are too long and actually touch the sides of the pan, this can damage the pan.
To assemble a bread maker, the pan fits onto a shaft and is placed in the cooking chamber. The bread maker paddles slide to fit the shaft inside the pan. When the motor is running, the shaft rotates, causing the blades to rotate inside the pan, mixing the contents. The machine has several cycles and, in addition to mixing, will use a different rotation pattern designed to knead the dough after it has risen.
After the dough is made and given time to rise, the bread maker becomes a small oven and bakes the bread in the pan inside. Usually, the machine notifies the user when the bread is baked. When the bread is removed from the bread machine, the bread machine paddles have been baked into the bottom of the loaf. After they are removed there is a small hole in the bottom of the bread which marks the position of the plates during baking.
