Career development templates help individuals understand their skills and the job market. They are not tests, but models that include analysis, planning, execution, and reflection stages. These models are designed by psychologists, counselors, and HR specialists.

Career development templates are systems, usually used with simple visual aids, that a person can utilize to better understand what type of career he or she should pursue. There are several different templates that have been developed over time and by different people to help with this process. In general, however, they all share a number of different steps as a means by which a person can better understand their skills and the market. Career development models are often self-alternating and often include an overlapping end and start step.

Most career development models are designed by psychologists, counselors, or human resources (HR) specialists who help others better understand their own professional skills. They are not tests designed to help a person find their ideal career, but are models that a person can analyze and understand what they might be best suited for. A model usually starts, for example, with an evaluation or analysis period. Most career development models have a person use this initial step to consider their own skills as well as the needs of various markets that might interest them.

When this analysis is complete, many career development models move into one or more stages of planning and execution. This can be done in a single stage or in multiple stages depending on the model a person is using. A period of exploration is usually part of this stage, as the person uses the information gathered through the analytics to take a closer look at where their interests lie. Some career development models also use these stages as a time for someone to better understand the reality of their own skills or the market he or she wants to enter.

Career development models often follow this stage of development and planning with action. At that point, the person uses the collected information, as well as their plan, and actually executes the plan. After this execution, there is a period of reflection or analysis in which the person begins to understand how well their previous exploration and planning worked once they were put into action. This final stage of analysis ultimately overlaps with the assessment or reassessment stage of a new series of steps to be taken as the development model begins again.
