Chemtrails are a conspiracy theory that claims some jet contrails contain chemicals or biological agents deliberately sprayed on the public for an unknown purpose. They are said to be distinguishable from ordinary contrails by their longer duration, thickness, and unusual patterns. The theory began in 1998 and has been denied by scientists, universities, and governments worldwide. The purpose of chemtrails is debated, ranging from benign measures to sinister scenarios like chemical population control and biological warfare.
Chemtrails are the basis of a theory that some contrails left by jets are not simply condensation, but include chemicals or biological agents deliberately sprayed on the unsuspecting public for an unidentified purpose. The term chemtrails comes from the phrase “chemtrails,” just like contrail comes from “contrails.” Chemtrails do not include crop dusting or chemicals released during aerial attempts to fight fires. The word refers only to air trails that are said to be created by the high-altitude release of substances not present in ordinary contrails, resulting in the appearance of what proponents consider to be unusual sky trails.
The chemtrail conspiracy theory, as it’s known, began in 1998, after the Air Force Air University created a strategy document filled with what-if scenarios for maintaining future military dominance. Conspiracy theorists have accused the Air Force of using planes to spray unwitting Americans with unknown substances. Those planes created unusual contrail patterns, called “mystery trails.” Investigative journalist and author William Thomas is credited with coining the phrase “chemtrails” when his reports on the matter received national attention.
Proponents of this theory argue that chemtrails can be differentiated from contrails in several ways. Not only do they last longer, but they’re also thicker and form patterns that look like “X”s, grids, and dashed or parallel lines. Often they become wispy “clouds” that come together to form a veil. Chemtrails are also said to have color spectra in the streams. Unmarked or military aircraft flying at unusual altitudes or excessive concentrations of sky trails in a single area also indicate their presence.
Chemtrails are generally believed to be toxic, although proponents disagree about their purpose. Ideas range from benign measures like trying to vaccinate citizens against disease or bioterrorism and global warming mitigation measures, to more sinister scenarios like identity tracking, military weapons testing, chemical population control and biological warfare . Symptoms are said to range from flu-like conditions, including neck pain and stomach cramps, to severe pneumonia-like breathing difficulties.
Scientists, universities, publications and governments around the world have denied the existence of chemtrails. The United States has received so many complaints that NASA, EPA, FAA and NOAA issued a jointly published fact sheet in 2000 explaining how contrails form and outlining their known and potential impacts on temperature and on the climate. Other countries, including Britain and Canada, where chemtrails are alleged to be prevalent, have also vehemently refuted the chemtrail conspiracy theory.
