What are chip hammers?

Chipping hammers are hand-held power tools used for breaking up concrete. They can be electrically, pneumatically, or hydraulically powered and use points or chisels to chip concrete. The weight of the hammer determines its effectiveness, with heavier models capable of nearly 3000 blows per minute. Safe and effective use requires following instructions, wearing safety equipment, greasing the bit, installing the appropriate bit or chisel, and cleaning the tool after use. Control is achieved by gripping the rear pistol grip handle and shaft, and optional equipment is available to reduce vibration and protect the operator.

Chipping hammers are durable, lightweight, hand-held power tools used for chipping or breaking up concrete. They are rugged, highly manoeuvrable and can be electrically, pneumatically or hydraulically powered.
Each power source has advantages and disadvantages. For example, air chipping hammers are used in conditions where there is excess moisture; hydraulic hammers are commonly used for heavier and more complex jobs.

Chipping hammers use points or chisels and vibration, among other things, to quickly and cleanly chip unwanted concrete. Most commonly thought of as concrete breaking tools, these hammers, when used correctly and with the correct bits or chisels installed, are useful for breaking up ceramic tile and removing grout.

The effectiveness of chipping hammers is generally determined by their weight. The heaviest models, those weighing over 25 pounds (about 11 kg), are normally capable of nearly 3000 blows per minute (BPM), while the lightest models only deliver 900 to 950 BPM. Most commercial hammers weigh between 9 and 30 pounds (about 4 to 13.6 kg). There are, however, some models that weigh less than six pounds (2.72 kg), resemble power drills or pneumatic wrenches, and are designed for the do-it-yourselfer. The compactness of today’s power hammer allows it to be used where a wet saw would be ineffective or too cumbersome and a sledgehammer would cause significant excess damage. The low weight and portability of the chipping hammer also allow it to be used comfortably for chipping vertical and elevated surfaces.

Safe and effective use of tools requires that the operator (1) read and follow all operating instructions pertaining to the particular hammer to be used; (2) wear the correct safety equipment, including heavy gloves, long sleeves, long pants, and most importantly, goggles or goggles; (3) grease the bit before operation; (4) install the appropriate bit or chisel based on the job requirements, and (5) clean the tool after the job is finished.

Control of the manual breaker is achieved by gripping the rear pistol grip handle of the hammer with one hand and the barrel or shaft with the other. This controls vibration and maintains handling. Some heavier hammers now come with a detachable second handle that can be screwed into the shaft for easier control of the tool. Many manufacturers now offer optional equipment such as rotary and shock-absorbing handles to reduce vibration and heat shields to protect the operator from excessive frictional heat caused when the hammer becomes hot during use.
