Commercial security systems protect businesses and may include detection, surveillance, and communication tools. They are often customized and monitored by outside agencies, and the price depends on the hardware and monitoring services required.

Commercial security systems are generally those designed to protect a commercial interest, such as a factory, warehouse, shop or office. The term can also refer to any commercially sold security system, but this is generally not the case. Components of these systems often include detection, surveillance, and communication tools. These systems may be monitored by an outside agency, patched directly into the police department’s communications center, or unmonitored and simply intended to record information or scare individuals.

One of the hallmarks of all commercial security systems is detection components. Detectors can include motion detection devices and even sound detectors. Some detectors are designed to distinguish the sound of glass breaking from other normal sounds. Infrared detectors look for unusual heat signatures that could represent an intruder. To avoid false alarms, most can be set to varying levels of sensitivity depending on the amount of environmental activity expected in the area.

Surveillance may or may not be included in commercial security systems, depending on the company’s needs. Most of the time, this surveillance takes the form of security cameras set up to monitor both indoor and outdoor areas. These cameras can go to a closed-circuit television monitor that is constantly monitored, or they can simply be recorded to tape or a computer hard drive. If an issue is discovered later, the recording will be pulled and reviewed at that time. If not, it is usually archived and deleted after a specified period of time.

Communication components can be located or used to send a signal to others who are not in the immediate vicinity. An example of a localized communication component is an audible alarm, which is standard on most commercial security systems. Silent alarms can be used to alert authorities or a monitoring center that suspicious activity has been detected. This is done by connecting the system to a telephone line or Internet connection.

Although often sold under a brand name, commercial security systems may not receive as much mass publicity as residential ones. These systems are often a little more difficult to package in bulk units when compared to residential systems due to the varying complexity of the locations they are installed in. Therefore, marketing tends to focus on individual businesses rather than the market as a whole.

A sales representative or security consultant often meets with companies interested in commercial security systems to come up with a customized plan. This plan will include identifying areas of concern or vulnerability and crafting a security strategy accordingly. The total price of a commercial security system is largely based on the amount of hardware required and the monitoring services included.
