What are contractions?

Labor pains are caused by contractions that prepare the body for delivery. True labor pains are regular and grow stronger, while false labor pains are irregular and do not mean the birth process is starting. Pain relief options are available, and premature labor should be reported to a doctor. Preparation through birthing classes and hospital visits can help make the process easier.

Labor pains in pregnancy are pains associated with the labor process and the contractions that occur to prepare the body for delivery. Contractions are what cause pain and prepare the uterus for delivery by causing the cervix to thin and soften before birth and then dilate, creating a natural way out for the fetus. All of this preparation is hard, often painful work; hence the name.

True labor pains are a sign that labor is starting and are the result of contractions that occur at regular intervals, lasting anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute or more. They generally grow stronger as time goes on and childbirth gets closer. The pains from contractions generally start in the lower back and travel across the front of the body to the stomach.

During childbirth, a woman may choose to relieve labor pains with pain-blocking medications or she may choose to practice techniques that help manage pain. The choice is personal and can only be made by the mother based on what she is experiencing. In some cases, pain is present, but the labor process is not progressing as it should. In this case, medications may be given to assist the labor process or a C-section may be required.

False labor pains or Braxton-Hicks contractions may occur as the birth approaches, but they do not mean that the birth process is starting. These are characterized by irregular contractions that come and go sporadically, ease or stop with changing position or walking, often felt only in the lower abdomen or groin area, and are accompanied by no release of amniotic fluid. These may seem real, but usually pass without any event. If your waters break or you start bleeding or you feel contractions on a regular basis, you should call your doctor or midwife or go to a hospital.

Premature labor pains, or signs of labor that occur before the 37th week of pregnancy, should be brought to the attention of your obstetrician. Premature labor that results in a premature birth increases the chance that your baby will need special medical care at birth. Women who experience painful or regular contractions before 37 weeks should see a doctor.

While labor and delivery can be painful, it is a natural, albeit challenging process that most women experience with little difficulty. You can best prepare for labor and delivery by taking birthing classes and visiting the hospital or facility where you will be delivering.
