What are crossovers?

Crossover vehicles combine attributes from multiple categories and were created in response to the declining popularity of gas-guzzling SUVs. Consumers should consider their needs when choosing a crossover, as they can vary in terms of storage space and seating. Research and testing are important when making a major purchase like a vehicle.

All cars fit a flexible ranking system. Consumers recognize these classifications with titles such as: Sedan, Sports Car, Convertible, Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), Van, and Truck. Crossover vehicles take attributes from two or more categories and combine them into a single vehicle. They are also sometimes called crossover utility vehicles, or CUVs.

The popularity of the gas-loving SUV had begun to wane as gas prices rose in the early 21st century. Consumers turned to car companies to produce a fun and modern utility vehicle. In response, auto companies proposed crossover vehicles. By 2006, there were 41 types of crossover vehicles, and their sales accounted for approximately 50% of the total SUV market.

Crossover vehicles will generally favor one of their categories. Some will have more storage space like a truck, while others will leave room for extra seats like a mini van. Many offer a third row of seats that can be folded up or down to accommodate either preference. Finding the right crossover for a consumer’s particular needs can be tricky as defining a crossover is not an exact science.

When considering the purchase of a CUV, consumers must weigh the factors that they consider important. Those who are more interested in transporting children and accessories like strollers and coolers should look for vehicles that maximize storage space and offer enough seats for children with friends. Those looking for a personal vehicle for purposes like hauling hiking or camping gear or transporting pets are more likely to gravitate toward a sturdier crossover vehicle with fewer seats.

The only real way to determine which vehicle is the right one is to do your research and test. Nothing gives you as accurate a view of the vehicle as getting on the seats. Try third rows for comfort level, measure strollers and gear, and compare measurements of storage areas to make sure they will fit any need. A vehicle is a major purchase and consumers should look to meet both style and utility when purchasing one.
