What are Geo-membranes?

Geomembranes are waterproof synthetic polymer membranes used to prevent fluid migration into man-made structures. They are often made from PVC or polyethylene and can be used with soil liners or geotextiles to prevent pollution. They are commonly used in landfills and have other applications such as containing chemical spills. Proper installation and bonding of seams is important to ensure effectiveness. Geomembranes are important for waste containment and must be durable and resistant to wear and chemicals.

Geomembranes are waterproof membranes used in conjunction with rocks or earth to block the migration of fluids into man-made structures. In most cases, they are made from synthetic polymers. Unlike other methods of controlling fluid movement, such as using clay, asphalt, or cement-stabilized sand, these membranes have almost no permeability if there are no holes in the material. Thanks to their flexibility, they can adapt to the settling and displacement of the land. Geomembranes can also be called synthetic linings, polymer membranes, or flexible membrane linings.

Geomembranes are often made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), medium density polyethylene, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, or a similar type of material. Thanks to their ability to block fluids, they can help prevent the dispersion of contaminants and can be used with soil liners or geotextiles to create a composite coating system that provides added safety. Geotextile fabrics, made from polyester or polypropylene, are used with the soil to provide filtration, reinforcement, or drainage in many civil engineering applications such as levees, canals, and railroads.

These membranes are primarily used as liners in landfills to help prevent pollution of the surrounding area by chemicals or other hazardous leachates. When a landfill reaches its maximum capacity, a final geomembrane cover is often placed over it to prevent gas escape and rain intrusion. However, these membranes have many other applications and are useful wherever the movement of liquids needs to be controlled or prevented. They can be used for something as simple as building a decorative pond or as potentially dangerous as containing a spill from a chemical storage tank. They can be used in mining to help contain chemical solutions or to reduce the loss of metals leached from the ore.

When preparing an area for geomembrane installation, the ground should be cleared of any sharp objects such as sticks that could puncture the lining; if necessary, geotextiles can be placed underneath to reduce the risk of tearing. Geomembrane siding panels are typically bonded at adjacent seams, either by extrusion welding, hot wedge seaming, or hot air welding. Generally, hot air welding is used as a temporary measure to immobilize the coating before an extrusion weld is applied. The seams are subsequently tested to ensure there are no leaks and that they are properly joined.

Geomembranes are used by many businesses and contractors in an effort to minimize the effect of human development activities on the environment. Therefore, although geomembrane liners are used in many applications, they are especially important for waste containment. They are made from highly durable materials, often with an expected life span of hundreds of years. They must be resistant to chemicals and wear, so that the passage of time and corrosion do not affect the integrity of the coating and the environment is protected.
