Li-Polymer batteries are thin, lightweight, and rechargeable, commonly used in electronic devices. They are a safer alternative to lithium-ion batteries and are less flammable. LiPoly batteries are lighter in weight and ideal for laptops, cell phones, and digital cameras. To increase battery life, dim the screen, avoid multitasking, keep it clean, and cool. Zinc-based batteries are an environmentally friendly alternative to lithium-ion batteries.

Li-Polymer batteries are thin, rectangular, lightweight batteries used in many electronic items such as laptops, desktop computers, and cell phones. They are usually designed to be rechargeable which is why they are commonly used with electronic devices. “LiPo” and “LiPoly” are common abbreviated names for lithium polymer batteries, which are considered a safer alternative to lithium ion batteries.

An alternative battery

LiPoly batteries are often used as an alternative to lithium ion batteries for several reasons. Firstly, Li-ion batteries have lithium tightly packed inside them and because they are so powerful, if a short occurs inside them, it can lead to fire. Cylindrical in shape, Li-ion batteries look more like a larger version of AA batteries rather than the narrow, flat Li-Polymer batteries. Both Li-ion and LiPoly batteries come in rechargeable versions, but Li-polymer batteries are not as prone to flammability as Li-ion batteries.

Zinc-based batteries are another alternative to lithium-ion batteries as they are long-lasting, not easily flammable, and are more environmentally friendly than lithium-ion batteries. However, lithium is a popular choice of battery as it provides the largest amount of electrical energy possible in energy per unit weight of all solid elements.

flammability
As with nearly all batteries, LiPoly batteries will explode if overcharged, but because they contain polymer gel, LiPoly batteries usually don’t catch fire when crushed, as Li-ion batteries are prone to do. The reason for the difference in flammability reactions between the two types of batteries is the way the lithium is suspended inside the batteries. In Li-ion batteries, Li-ion is suspended in flammable organic solvents, while in Li-polymer batteries, Li-ion is contained in a polymer gel that is not easily flammable.
Light
Lithium-polymer batteries cost more than lithium-ion batteries and lose their capacity more quickly. However, LiPoly batteries are lighter in weight, making them ideal as notebook or laptop batteries, computer batteries, as well as batteries for cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), camcorders, hearing aids, and digital cameras. The reason Li-Polymer batteries are so lightweight is that the polymer gel packs fit into spaces within the battery and eliminate the need for a metal casing to enclose the electrodes.
Increase battery life
Like most batteries, LiPoly batteries die if they are not charged often enough, if they overheat, or when the battery life runs out. Battery life depends mostly on how much you use it, but there are a few things that can be done to help it last longer:

Dim the screen: Most mobile phones and computers allow the user to change the brightness level of the screen. By dimming the screen as much as possible, battery life can be extended more than with a bright screen.

Don’t multitask: While it can help you get work done faster, multitasking on cell phones or computers drains battery life faster. When your electronic device runs more than one program at a time, it consumes more energy. Even if a user isn’t multitasking, it’s best to close any programs that aren’t currently in use.

Keep it clean: To prevent buildup from developing, clean the metal contact plates on the battery, which are located on the end of the battery that contacts the electronic device. A cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol works well to remove the buildup.

Keep it cool: Keep electronic devices from getting too hot. Some devices, especially laptops, get hot when used for long periods of time or if the vents aren’t ventilated. Removing dust from the vents will keep your computer cooler, prevent overheating, and ultimately extend battery life.
