Marshmallow Peeps, originally handmade by Rodda Candy Company, are now mass-produced by Just Born every six minutes. New shapes, flavors, and colors are introduced every year, and they are often used in recipes. They are also gluten and nut-free, and low in calories. Studies have shown that they are virtually indestructible.
Most people are familiar with Marshmallow Peeps, the brightly colored, sugar-coated marshmallow shapes made by Just Born. Indeed, the story of one of the best-selling marshmallow candies is quite intriguing. Originally, Peeps were handmade by the Rodda Candy Company, taking 27 hours to make just one chick. Then, in 1953, Just Born bought Rodda. A year later, in 1954, Just Born discovered a way to mass-produce Peeps marshmallows – now a Peeps is born every six minutes.
Almost every year, a new shape, flavor or color of Marshmallow Peeps is introduced – sometimes only as a limited edition item. The original colors were yellow, pink and white. Then, in 1995, a new color came onto the scene: lavender. In 1998, blue became the fifth color for Marshmallow Peeps. New colors, such as Peeps green, red, orange, brown and black can now be found, depending on the season.
In 1999, the first flavor was introduced – vanilla cream. Then, a year later, the strawberry cream arrived. Mint, orange cream and gingerbread flavors are also found when the season is right. Chocolate mousse is a favorite Peeps flavor for many people as well. In fact, chocolate mousse is the perfect flavor for many of the best recipes.
Shapes are often related to a season. There are chicks, bunnies, eggs and tulips for Easter and spring. So for Halloween and fall, there are pumpkins, spooky cats, and ghosts. When Christmas and winter roll around, consumers can find supermarkets filled with marshmallow Peeps in the shape of snowmen, stars, holiday trees, gingerbread and the word “Joy.” Just a few months later, in February, hearts and teddy bears can be purchased for Valentine’s Day. Often there will be marshmallow Peeps for the 4th of July holidays and other fun-filled celebrations.
Marshmallow Peeps are fat free and gluten and nut free, for those with food allergies. Also, there is an option to buy ones made with Splenda, a sugar substitute. However, even those that are made with pure sugar are only 32 calories per piece.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that delicious items like Marshmallow Peeps are used in recipes. For example, they can be dipped in chocolate for a fabulous fondue. They can also be used as a topping for cakes, cupcakes, cookies. They’re also fantastic when placed on a bed of whipped cream in hot cocoa. Many people prefer to have their Marshmallow Peeps dipped in chocolate, rolled in coconut and then frozen. There are entire cookbooks people have written dedicated to cooking with marshmallow candy.
It has long been commented that marshmallow Peeps are indestructible. In fact, a number of studies have been completed to determine what extreme forces marshmallow candies can withstand. CNN also reported on April 12, 1998 that a group of scientists at Emory University did great odds to study the destructibility of Peeps. Indeed, they had determined them to be virtually indestructible.
