What are RPGs?

Role-playing games (RPGs) have a long history and exist in various formats, including computer and video games. The earliest RPGs were war games and free-form theater, while fantasy-exploring RPGs emerged in the late 1960s. Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) became one of the best-known RPGs ever, inspiring many video games. RPGs include tabletop RPGs, Live Role Playing (LARP), and computer settings called MUDs. While video games have a more defined system, they still provide entertainment. World of Warcraft is an online game that involves interaction with players from all over the world.

Role-playing games (RPGs) have a long history, and there are many such games now that exist in computer and video game formats and are still played offline. They are games in which players take on one or more roles and can work their way through created scenarios, often based on some element of fantasy. These games may have established rules, but there may be interpretations of the rules or free-form decision-making within the rules. This varies based on the type of games you play.

The earliest RPGs were probably war games, which were developed as early as the 18th century and, like chess, used pieces to simulate battles played out on a chessboard. Earlier plays also existed in the form of free-form or improv theater. Another inspiration for this game came later in the 1960s when some groups chose to hold events to reenact certain periods in history. These included the Society for Creative Anachronism, where people attended events dressed in medieval garb. Other groups have re-enacted battles, leaning on history to create accurate representations.

There were several fantasy-exploring RPGs in the late 1960s and early 1970s. These were the forerunners of arguably one of the best-known RPGs ever, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), created by Dave Arneson and E. Gary Gygax. The game allowed a dungeon master to use strategies provided or create dungeons that multiple players could enter. Based on the choices and actions of the players various events would occur and success could be achieved by completing a journey through a dungeon. Players could choose to be a variety of characters, good or bad, most of which relied heavily on fantasy elements, and some players kept their characters from one adventure to the next.

As D&D grew in popularity, computers and video game systems were becoming more and more complex. This eventually led to the development of many RPG video games, which stole the popularity of games like D&D. RPGs are by far among the most played games today, although there are still fans of D&D and fans of other RPGs played in person.

There are several types of RPGs. These include tabletop RPGs like D&D. Contrasting this is Live Role Playing (LARP) where players don’t just describe but can role play. These usually take place in multiple rooms or in an outdoor space. In computer settings called MUDs (multi-user dungeons) people can participate in the virtual reality space and cooperate with other players to complete tasks or achieve goals, and use an avatar or role-playing character to do so.

The term RPG is usually given to video games that have adventure or fantasy elements and allow the person playing to control one or more characters. However, the game system is usually much more defined and limited, and the characters have a fixed number of choices, especially in some early games. They are still fun to play and Dungeon Master or a Final Fantasy game can take up or maybe waste many hours. These don’t capture the original spirit of RPGs because they don’t involve interacting with others. Some games have tried to change that, such as the online game World of Warcraft, which has become very popular and involves interaction with players from all over the world.
