Tealight candles are small, inexpensive candles that come in metal casings and are burned inside a candle holder for decoration or to keep food and tea warm. They pose a fire risk and should be used with caution on fire-resistant surfaces and not left unattended.

Tealight candles are small candles that come in metal casings that encase the wax as the candle burns. Typically, tealights are burned inside a candle holder and can be used for a variety of purposes, including decoration. Many candle stores, drugstores, and markets sell tealight candles, sometimes known as tealights, usually in large bags of 50 or 100 candles. These candles are very inexpensive and can be useful to keep around the house.

A typical tealight is made of white wax molded into a round shape inside a small metal cup. The candle wick is often anchored to the bottom of the cup, because when the candle burns, the wax becomes liquid and the wick could potentially float through the liquid. Most tea candles burn for three to five hours, depending on the quality of the wax and wick and their size.

These candles were originally designed for use in food service. Tealights can be lit under trays of food to help keep food warm or to keep tea warm, as appropriate. These candles are also used under oil diffusers to gently warm the scented oil, encouraging it to diffuse into the air. A single tealight candle can give off a surprising amount of light and heat, an effect that can be amplified by using multiple candles together.

Tealight candle holders come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some are very small and designed primarily to protect surrounding surfaces from the heat of the candle. Others are larger and it is also possible to find candle holders that are meant to house multiple tea lights. Glass is a common choice for tealight holders, but ceramics and metals can also be used.

These candles pose a fire risk. They can get extremely hot, especially if flammable materials fall into the spark plug. The heat can warp the metal bowl and make it extremely hot, potentially allowing the metal to burn into the underlying surface. If candle tips or wax come off the deformed metal, a fire can start and spread very quickly, using the candle wax as a fuel source. For this reason, it is important to use candle holders, tiles, trivets or plates with candles, or to burn the candles on a fire resistant surface such as stone or tile. Also, tealights should not be left unattended and flammable materials should be kept away from candles as they burn.
