A novelist is not, as the name suggests, simply someone who writes love stories. Love stories can actually take place in many different genres. Rather, a novelist writes a particular type of love story defined by the romance genre. In romance, adventure, like love, is often a theme. The hero or heroine may face mortal danger, enslavement, or other harrowing adventures.

The lovers’ union is often an unfulfilled goal for most of the book, to be achieved at the end. Alternatively, the lovers unite early, but their happy union is interrupted by a twist of fate, and the rest of the book follows them until it can be re-established.

A romance is a fictional narrative that had its roots in early Gothic novels, with key features of innocence, cast against malevolence, and an atmosphere of melancholy and fear. Some of them featured a doomed love story. Today, the novelist often chooses between a typical Gothic setting, exotic settings far from the reader’s everyday and ordinary life, or historical settings. Often at least one of the main characters is rich or noble, though possibly in disguise, allowing for a wider choice of settings.

A novelist can write a standalone novel or contribute to a series. Novels now appear as print books, ebooks, movies, and in other forms. The novelist can count on an almost completely homogeneous audience in one respect: 90.5% of all novels are read by women.

There are a number of professional organizations to which a novelist can belong, depending on their location. In the United States, there are Romance Writers of America. In the UK, there is the Association of Romantic Novelists. According to the Romance Writers of America, new novel titles in 2008 were 7,311, during which time 74,800,000 individuals read at least one novel.
