Almond growers plant, cultivate, pollinate, harvest, and process almonds. They use bees for pollination and occasionally graft different types of almond trees together. Almond farmers advocate for clean water, air, and produce almonds for local and global consumption.
Some of the things almond growers do is plant, cultivate and facilitate the pollination of almond trees. They also harvest the almonds on time. Some almond producers operate packing companies and take other producers’ harvests to clean and pack for market. For the most part, almond farmers operate almond farms that produce all the almonds in the world.
Almonds are grown on trees found on almond farms. These groves of almond trees are not called almond orchards, they are simply called almond trees by almond growers. The trees are pruned and topped much like a tree in an apple orchard and require occasional trimming to create an attractive tree for almond production. Once matured, cultivators use large vibrating machines to grab the trees and shake the almonds off the trees. The almonds are collected in a canvas tarp which is placed around the tree before being shaken so as not to lose too many of the fallen nuts.
Occasionally growers try to graft two different types of almond trees together in the hope that a new species of almond will be created that is impervious to disease and pests. During the pollination season, almond growers receive millions of bees and are strategically placed around the grove of trees to help pollinate the almond trees. Bees are the best source of pollination among almond trees, and hives usually remain in place until the blossoms have nearly left all the almond trees. Farmers create useful roads and trails for beekeepers to travel while placing the various beehives. Attempts have been made by growers to create a self-pollinating almond tree, however bees are the most efficient method to achieve pollination to date.
Some almond growers travel and represent the entire almond tree population at certain events where the almond is being discussed. At government functions and social gatherings, almond farmers can be seen advocating for clean water, clean rain and fresh air. Some almond producers supply almonds that are used around the world, while others produce all almonds for a specific area of the globe, a particular company or for local consumption. On the biggest farms, producers not only harvest the almonds, but also smoke, salt and blanch the almonds to be packaged and taken to market.
