What does a civil engineering intern do?

[ad_1]

Civil engineering trainees work under the supervision of licensed engineers to learn how to analyze, field test, and research engineering projects. They must have a four-year degree in engineering and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. The trainee program can last from 12 months to several years.

A civil engineering trainee performs most of the same duties as a civil engineer, only under the supervision of a licensed, registered and experienced civil engineer. The purpose of a civil engineering trainee position is to train a newly graduated and licensed engineer how to properly perform all job tasks in a safe environment that allows mentoring and learning. A civil engineering trainee learns how to analyze, field test, and research to complete engineering projects with limited scope. As experience increases, so does task complexity, while supervision decreases. At the end of the trainee period, the engineer can take an exam to obtain the right to practice civil engineering without supervision.

The requirements for becoming a civil engineering trainee are the same as for becoming a civil engineer. In the US, the intern must have a four-year degree in engineering from an accredited college or university, and graduates must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and meet state licensure requirements. Most other countries have similar education and licensing requirements.

Those who pass EF are qualified to work as civil engineering interns. Many civil engineering interns will perform technical tasks from day one, but under the supervision of an experienced engineer, whose goal is to help the intern gain on-the-job experience. This arrangement helps the intern learn aspects of the job that are impossible to teach in the classroom. In the US, a civil engineering intern will be entitled to work as an unsupervised engineer upon completing the Engineering Principles and Practices exam.

Civil engineers apply scientific and technical knowledge to practical situations. They design and plan the construction of public facilities and structures such as roads, bridges and public utility systems. Civil engineering interns learn to perform these same functions and, in larger companies, may attend classes. The civil engineering trainee program can last from 12 months to several years.

Civil engineering interns will do field work, take measurements and conduct research. They will draw plans, execute sketches, and examine maps and documents. Civil engineering interns make estimates and review paths and legal descriptions during the design process. They can switch between many different engineering concentrations and work with many types of engineering specialists in larger organizations. This provides new interns with a broad base of engineering experience, while networking with experienced professionals and gaining an additional perspective on the civil engineering profession.
