Junior web developers work on the technical aspects of websites, building databases, writing code, and managing eCommerce systems. They are typically part of a web development team and have training but lack experience. Job descriptions vary depending on the employer.

Junior web developer jobs are centered around the inner workings of websites. On the Internet, web pages link, open, and display content according to a series of codes and commands. Web developers are technical professionals who write these commands. Most of the time, these professionals start at the starting position of junior web developer.

Creating Internet sites is a job with many parts. Most of the time, websites involve graphics, links and internal content. They also sometimes have space for user-generated content, such as user uploads and comments on published material. All these features must be specially designed and integrated into a website by the web development teams.

A junior web developer is almost always a member of a web development team. The “junior” designation indicates that the developer has training but does not yet have a lot of experience. Training for web developers often includes degrees in engineering or computer technology, as well as experience working with various web building tools and software programs.

Much of junior web development work is highly technical. While some of the work necessarily involves website layout, most aesthetic aspects of web design are assigned to a graphic design team. Web developers build the site’s mechanical structure from the inside out. They build databases and caches of information; they write code and drive traffic. They often set up and manage eCommerce systems, website hosting platforms, and search engine optimization rubrics, and sometimes they must also provide user support and training.

Web development teams often have one or more junior web developer positions to train new talent and allow new professionals to gain a broader perspective on the profession. There are no specific junior web developer tasks that are universal for all lower-level web developer jobs, but more often than not, the job involves a lot of observation, practice, and rework. Junior web developers are often given simpler tasks. They are called upon to help senior developers with more difficult projects and participate in small chunks until they have the experience needed to carry out certain aspects of development independently.

The junior web developer job description may vary depending on the employer. A web design company working on a variety of projects for many different clients might be interested in hiring a junior member with a wide range of skills. If the web development team is located at a single company, however, the job description will often be much more specific, requiring knowledge and experience with the systems and programs in use at that company. Whether there are hard and fast requirements for lower-level web developers is entirely job-dependent, although hands-on experience, whether from school or past jobs, is always an asset.
