What is Black Lawrence Press?

[ad_1]

Black Lawrence Press is a New York-based publisher specializing in poetry and contemporary fiction. They hold four literary competitions a year and publish The Adirondack Review. Dzanc Books acquired them in 2008.

Black Lawrence Press is a trademark of Dzanc Books. Located in upstate New York, the publisher specializes in poetry and contemporary fiction. It is named after two rivers that grace upstate New York, the Black River and the St. Lawrence River. The press is also in the same Lake Ontario region.
Founded in 2003, Black Lawrence Press has published the work of many modern writers in the relatively short time it has existed. Frank Matagrano’s I Can Only Go Fast As The Guy In Front of Me and James Reidel’s My Window Seat for Arlena Twigg are examples of the poetry collections published by the company.

In addition to publishing quality literature and poetry, Black Lawrence Press also holds four literary competitions a year. The St. Lawrence Book Award offers a cash prize and publication to one writer each year. This award is intended for writers who have not previously published a volume of book-length work. Winners of two Black River Chapbook print contests receive 25 hardcover copies of their work as well as a cash prize. The Hudson Prize, formerly the Ontario Prize, honors unpublished volumes of short stories and poetry. The winners of this award receive a cash prize and a publication.

Black Lawrence Press is also the publisher of The Adirondack Review. This magazine publishes quarterly issues of fiction, poetry, academic essays, artwork, book reviews, and film reviews. In fact, the publisher often publishes works by authors previously published in one or more issues of the magazine.

In 2008, Black Lawrence Press was purchased by Dzanc Books, which also owns another small publishing house, OV Books. Around the same time, Dzanc bought the online literary magazine Monkeybicycle. More information about the books published by this publisher or how to submit works to one of its competitions can be found on the company’s website.
