What is the art of intention in His Dark Materials?

[ad_1]

The Crafted Intention is a unique airship created by Lord Asriel in His Dark Materials series. It is powered by the energy that connects a human with their demon and can only be piloted by a human with a demon. Equipped with advanced weaponry, it uses anti-gravity technology and can be controlled by levers or the pilot’s intent. Lord Asriel has a more advanced version, and it’s unclear where the technology came from.

A Crafted Intention is a fictional vehicle in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series of fantasy novels. The craft appears in the latest book in the series, The Amber Spyglass.

The main form of air travel used in the books is a zeppelin, and it appears that this is the main airship used in the world where Lyra comes from. However, all manner of other air transports exist in the many universes that make up the story, from the airplanes and helicopters of our world to the mountable dragonflies of the world of Gallivespian.

Lord Asriel, Lyra’s father, appears to have created his own form of air travel, unique to many universes. This airship is the intended vessel, and is made so that Lord Asriel’s army can reach the Realm of Heaven in his flying Cloud Mountain, something that appears to be difficult or impossible for other means of transportation.

The intended vessel superficially appears to have the cockpit of a gypropter, which is the word used in the Lyra universe for what we would call a helicopter. It is covered by a “glass roof”, which allows the driver to see out. It has a number of different levers to control it, as well as a metal cap to bind the person’s thoughts directly to the crafted intention. It stands on six legs, which appear asymmetrical, and is made up of various tubes, cylinders, cables, gauges and other apparatuses. Overall it seems to draw on the visual style of what is commonly referred to as steam-punk.

The power source for the Intentional Dropship is the energy that connects a human with his demon, and therefore the Intentional Dropship can only be piloted by a human with a demon. Exactly how power is extracted from the interaction is unclear, but it does not appear to be a traumatic procedure.

The purposeful vessel is equipped with advanced weaponry, making it an ideal combat vessel. It appears to use some sort of advanced laser, which can be fired with pinpoint accuracy, allowing it to destroy enemies instantly and even intercept artillery in mid-air.

The mechanism by which the craft’s intention flies is never clarified in the books, but it does not appear to be some sort of traditional propulsion. It seems very likely that the intentional craft uses some sort of anti-gravity technology, as it is capable of hovering perfectly still in the air and then instantly moving in any direction. While it can be controlled by levers and operated in the same way as a traditional aircraft, it is also able to bind directly to the controller’s mind, allowing for an unprecedented level of responsiveness, moving solely based on the pilot’s intent.

Mrs. Coulter steals a prototype of Lord Asriel’s intended ship to reach Nebula Mountain in the last book. It has been made clear, however, that Lord Asriel also has a more advanced version of the craft of intent. Whether or not there are only two, or many more, is never entirely clear. Nor is it certain where the intention-creation technology came from, whether it was created by Lord Asriel’s army, or whether it was discovered on one of the many worlds that joined his fight against the Kingdom of Heaven.
