The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, designed by IM Pei, is a museum in Cleveland, Ohio, dedicated to the history of rock and roll. It features seven floors of exhibits and artifacts, including a permanent collection honoring inductees, and generates over $100 million annually for the local economy.

Designed by noted architect IM Pei, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a 150,000 square foot museum dedicated to educating visitors about the history of rock and roll and how the musical genre is still relevant today. Located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, the pyramid-shaped museum opened its doors in 1995. The museum offers visitors seven floors of musical exhibits and artifacts to explore.

The first museum dedicated to the history of rock and roll, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame continually expands its exhibits and artifacts through items loaned or donated by artists and collectors from around the world. The exhibits pay homage to rock and roll legends and highlight specific eras and milestones in the evolution of music. Chuck Berry was the first to be inducted into the hall of fame and the museum displays one of his suits and his electric guitars. Visitors can also see one-of-a-kind artifacts, including Michael Jackson’s signature glove and John Lennon’s wire-rimmed glasses.

Several permanent collections grace the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame wing honors current music inductees. Visitors can explore the 2,900-square-foot structure highlighted by a multimedia presentation that provides background to those housed in the museum. Artists are qualified for hall of fame induction 25 years after releasing their first record. Additionally, the Hall of Fame wing houses display cases that include the autographs and artifacts of all inductees. A computerized jukebox provides thousands of songs performed by all who are enshrined.

Another permanent collection includes “Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll”. Chosen by museum staff, rock critics and historians, the songs represent some of the most popular and significant rock music in history. Artists with more selections include The Beatles, Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones.

The permanent exhibition “Listen to music: the evolution of audio technology” tells how audio recordings and listening devices have evolved over time. Featured exhibits include a 1920s radio, 1960s record player, and 1980s CD player. Visitors can also listen to recordings created by Thomas Edison.

Since its opening, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been a boon to Cleveland. More than seven million visitors have passed through the museum, and the hall generates more than $100 million into the local economy each year. Most visitors to the museum are from outside Cleveland.
Architecturally, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is made up of geometric shapes and is anchored by a 162-foot tower. The museum spans a 65,000 square foot square. In addition to exhibits and artifacts, the hall houses administrative offices, a gift shop and café.
