What to consider when buying silk robes?

Silk is a luxurious fabric used for clothing and bedding. Silk robes are popular for their sultry nature and can be made of 100% silk or a silk blend. Satin can also be made of silk. Style and color are the only other factors to consider when shopping for silk robes. They can last for years and can be affordable.

Silk is a fiber harvested from the cocoon of the silkworm. It is an incredibly soft, smooth and shiny fabric and is highly prized for all types of luxury clothing and bedding. Silk has been in use in China since at least 3000 BC, and was probably harvested much earlier.

Robes are one of the most popular uses of silk in clothing. They are typically intended for bedroom use, and are ideal for this setting due to the sultry nature often associated with the look and feel of the fabric. Silk robes are often made to match a specific set of lingerie, matching the color and overall look.

When shopping for silk robes, there are only two real factors to consider. The most important thing is to make sure that the robes you are buying are made of 100% silk, rather than a silk blend or “synthetic silk”, usually nylon or polyester. Occasionally silk robes will be composed of silk mixed with acetate, a wood fiber similar to silk, but more brittle and susceptible to damage by washing. Some silk robes use 100% silk, but then add an additional fabric as a lining, as long as the second fabric is soft enough to complement the silk, this shouldn’t be a problem. For example, many high-end silk robes have cashmere linings to protect the silk from damage and offer a sexy second fabric.

Don’t be confused by the term satin if it is used to describe your silk robes. Satin can be made of various fibers, one of which is silk. As long as satin is described somewhere as silk satin, rather than nylon or acetate, what you’re buying is still a silk robe. Most people prefer woven satin for silk robes, in contrast to cheaper knit satin – the difference is one of texture, as woven silk satin is much smoother to the touch than the rough surface of satin knitted.

The only other thing to worry about when shopping for silk robes is whether you enjoy the style and color. Silk robes come in a wide range of styles, some designed specifically for women and others for men. Some are meant to be flashy and act as a complement to your lingerie, while others are meant for relaxation and comfort. Most are clear on length and cut, and as long as you pay attention to what you’re buying, you should be happy with the result.

If treated properly and not subjected to a lot of direct sunlight, silk robes can last for years, especially if they are reinforced with a fiber like cashmere or angora. Although many people associate high costs with silk robes, the truth is that they can be pleasantly affordable. At the low end, silk robes can be found for less than US$50, while well-made, high-quality robes can be found for as little as US$150.
