Wingtip shoes, originally designed for outdoor use in Scotland and Ireland, now have a fashionable design with perforations along the wing and contrasting two-tone leather. Their popularity has remained consistent over the years.

Also known as the full brogue shoe, wingtip shoes are shoes with a pointed toe. Dropping in the center of the shoes, the toe box extends from both sides, creating a winged look. Looking down on the shoe, it appears that a bird has its wings fully extended. Originally created as a men’s shoe, the wingtip design is now commonly found in women’s and children’s shoes.

The wingtip shoe design first appeared in Scotland and Ireland. The design was used for shoes that were purpose-built to be tough and durable for long-term outdoor use. These original wingtip shoes were not intended for dress, but were completely utilitarian in the way they were constructed.

Perforations along the wing are a common decorative element of the wingtip design. However, the original purpose of the perforations was not ornamental. Instead, perforations were added to allow water to drain if the user discovered that they had stepped in the water. In Scotland and Ireland, this was a very common problem in the country, where bogs are prevalent.

These rugged leather shoes have evolved greatly over the decades since their first use as outdoor footwear providing comfort and durability. Its work shoe origins have been largely abandoned over the years. Now wingtips are considered a fashionable shoe.

The modern wingtip shoes worn now still have the perforations that the shoes of yore flaunted. However, its purpose now is to augment the wings of the shoe and further accentuate its distinctive shape and design quality. The edges of the shoe’s wingtips are now commonly serrated to further add to the drama of its unique design.

Along with these leather works, a common element is the contrasting two-tone leather of the newer styles. The toe leather and scarring are set in a color opposite to the main upper color of the shoe. These color contrasts can range from a simple difference in hue to two opposite colors. The stitching along the toe box can be done in the same shade as the leather on the rest of the shoe, or it can be done in a standout color to make the craftsmanship more apparent.

Wingtip shoes have changed greatly since they appeared decades ago. These changes have been reflected more in its use than in its basic design. What hasn’t changed about wingtip shoes over the centuries is their constant and consistent popularity.
