What’s a 12V Water Pump?

[ad_1]

A 12-volt water pump is ideal for RVs and small boats, powered by a car battery and able to pump fresh water from holding tanks or bilges. They are rugged and can withstand constant use, with plastic impellers that resist rust and corrosion.

A 12-volt water pump is the ideal way to supply running water to a recreational vehicle (RV), towed or motorized RV. Its compact size saves space within the confines of a motorhome’s somewhat cramped interior. More importantly, its ability to be powered by the standard 12-volt, direct current (DC) car battery ensures running water whether the RV is parked, near a municipal electricity source or not.

In the typical RV, a 12-volt water pump is normally mounted next to the fresh water holding tank. The pump is connected to an electrical panel which, in turn, is connected to one or more separate 12-volt batteries. There are commonly two hoses connected to the 12 volt water pump, one to take water from the tank to the pump and the other leading from the pump to the faucet or faucet. When the pump is activated at the panel, a small impeller in the pump sucks in, or draws, water from the tank, and then pushes it to the faucet.

The impeller of an older model 12-volt water pump is sometimes made of rust- and corrosion-resistant bronze or copper. Most of the more recently manufactured 12-volt water pumps, however, use plastic impellers. More flexible and even more resistant to rust than bronze, plastic impellers do not corrode and allow even small solid particles very often found in fresh water tanks to pass through the pump without jamming.

In addition to RVs, 12-volt water pumps are used in smaller motor boats. Not only are they needed to pump fresh water from holding tanks, these versatile pumps are also needed for another even more vital function. Boats, even brand new, have a tendency to collect water in the bilge, the bottom of a boat. Bilge pumps are 12-volt water pumps that are placed in the bilges of a boat and, if fitted with a float valve, will automatically pump this collected bilge water to the side when the bilge water reaches a certain level.

The 12-volt water pump is a rugged device and, in boats, is designed to be submersible. In most RVs, the water pump is, at the very least, waterproof. With the ability to withstand the rigors of near-constant operation, as well as the ability to deliver water at a constant pressure to the most remote areas using a standard car battery, these portable water pumps are more than just a convenience, they’re a necessity.
