What’s a 3D Trellis?

A 3D truss, made up of triangles arranged in shapes like tetrahedrons, provides extra strength and support to structures. Triangular shapes are used because they can withstand greater force without changing shape. The most common shape used is a tetrahedron. 3D trusses are used in floors, roofs, and towers, and are commonly made of metal. They are also used in space projects due to their ability to hold their shape under different conditions.

A three-dimensional (3D) truss is a type of structure used to give extra strength and support to structures such as bridges and buildings. Sometimes called the space beam, it consists of triangles arranged in three-dimensional triangular shapes such as tetrahedrons. These trusses are extremely strong and are able to withstand a great deal of force without changing shape or breaking.

Like other trellises, the 3D trellis consists of a series of triangular shapes. By using triangular pieces, the trusses are able to withstand much greater force than structures made of other shapes. Triangular shapes are used in trusses because they will not lose their shape when subjected to stress. Given enough force, a truss can break, but triangular sections aren’t subject to angular changes like other shapes, such as quadrilaterals, are.

The most commonly used shape in a 3D truss is a tetrahedron. This three-dimensional shape is made up of four triangles, arranged so that one triangle forms the base of the shape and the other three attach to each edge of the base, meeting at a point at the top. A similar structure may also be used, a pyramid, which has a square base and four triangular sides that meet at one point.

Trellises can be made from a variety of materials. Wood trusses are common in the construction of houses or other small structures. Large buildings or highly stressed structures, such as bridges, often make use of 3D metal trusses.

3D truss is commonly used to support a number of different structures. Floors, platforms and roofs make use of these trusses because they remain strong and stable in the center as well as on the edges of the structure. For very large platform-like structures, additional support beams can be placed under the center of the 3D truss to make the structure even more robust. Towers, especially power towers, can consist of a 3D truss, reaching great heights without collapsing.

Many structures used in space projects are built as a series of 3D trusses. This shape is easier to build than honeycomb stands and can hold its rigid shape under a variety of different conditions. Arranging an array of tetrahedrons together in different ways can create structures in any three-dimensional shape, with flat or contoured edges.
