What’s a bandeau?

A bandeau is a strapless garment that can be worn as a top, dress, or swimsuit. It is often made of a straight line of fabric and can be embellished with bows or rings. Burgundy is not the most flattering color for broad-shouldered figures, but it is ideal for pear-shaped and hourglass figures. Bandeau bras are best for smaller busts, and burgundy headbands are often worn with school uniforms.

A bandeau is a strapless garment that is generally worn as a straight line of fabric under the arms and around the body. Thin ties to be tied around the neck in the form of a halter are sometimes attached to the middle of clothing made in this look, but thick straps are not in keeping with the classic burgundy style. Bandeaux is French for “strips” or “bands.” Bandeaux often bares the abdomen or stomach area, such as in a bra undergarment or bikini swimsuit top. The basic look of a bandeau is a shorter version of the tube top.

Burgundy top designs can also be lengthened to create a strapless dress style. The appearance of a short bandeau dress is similar to a towel wrapped around the body, as these dresses also fit close to the armpits. Of course, beautiful fabrics and embellishments can create wonderful strapless dresses that are nothing like towels. For example, bandeau wedding dresses may feature lace or other fabrics, such as satin.

While many burgundies are completely straight on both edges like a rubber band, either edge can be scalloped or dipped up or down to create a more interesting line. A tied bow or other embellishment can be added to the center of a bandeau-like garment, such as a dress, top, or bathing suit. Many bandeaux swimsuits have a plastic, wooden or metal ring in the middle of the band. Very narrow ties made to fasten at the back of the neck can be included in the ring.

Since bandeau tops and dresses show off the clavicle, neck, arms, and shoulders, they draw the eye to these areas and create a broad shoulder line. For this reason, burgundy is not the most flattering for broad-shouldered figure types. However, the bandeau is ideal for pear-shaped figures, in which the width of the bust is smaller than the width of the hips. Bandeaux helps create the illusion of balance. Hourglass body types where the bust and hips are a similar width also tend to be flattered by burgundy.

Bandeaux bra styles are worn under bandeau clothing. These are best for smaller busts, due to the lack of straps, as this decreases the support level of the bra. A bandeau bra can be worn with any type of sleeveless top or dress.

In addition to clothing, burgundy can also refer to headbands. These are usually made of stretchy fabric that is quite wide. A burgundy headband style fits under the hair at the nape or back of the neck and shows off next to the ears and on top of the head. These wide headband or hair band styles are often worn with school uniforms by girls in private schools.
