A barbell rack is a piece of equipment used to hold bars and barbell equipment for training. It can hold a variety of different bars and plates, and is best placed on carpet or padding. Some racks feature one-sided designs or weight plate storage.

A barbell rack is a common piece of equipment in many conventional home gyms or membership gyms. As the name suggests, the barbell rack is used to hold bars and barbell equipment for your training. Capable of holding the full weight of a gym’s barbell weights, the rack can keep a variety of different bars and the many plates that can be used with weightlifting equipment organized.

A companion piece to your barbell bench, the barbell rack is typically a vertical shelf that holds barbell sets horizontally, one on top of the next. Typically holding between four and eight bars, the rack allows you enough room to easily remove each bar, even with weight remaining on the bars. Other barbell training equipment, such as clamps and plates, can be attached separately to hooks or knobs on the sides of the barbell rack.

One of the biggest space hogs in home gyms and other gyms, the barbell rack can condense home gym equipment into a small space, allowing more room for actual barbell exercises. The racks can fit comfortably in the corner of a room and allow sturdy support for the heaviest equipment, keeping it conveniently off the ground.

The barbell rack is capable of holding a variety of different bars, from the longer squat bar to the shorter curl bar to the more common bench press bar. Weights can be left on the bar when placed on the rack correctly. If there is a heavier weight left on a bar, it should be supplemented with a heavy weight on the reverse side of the bar rack.

Barbell racks are best placed on carpet or other padding, so as not to damage the floor, and can be spaced anywhere in the gym. Some bar stands feature one-sided designs that serve as interesting accent pieces. The one-sided design leans back and supports weight only on two legs, but uses the design to take up less space and support weight.

Another popular type of barbell rack features a piece that contains all the weight plates, arranged by size, from heaviest at the bottom to lightest at the top. To complement this first piece, a second rod support piece allows all the rods to stand upright on a single support, similar to an umbrella stand.
