What’s a barrel bolt?

[ad_1]

A bolt lock is a simple locking system used to secure a door from one side, consisting of a sliding metal bar and a strike plate. They come in various sizes and metals, with larger ones providing more security for applications like front doors.

A bolt lock, also called a sliding bolt lock or a bolt bolt, is a simple locking system used to secure a door from only one side. The bolt lock has two main components: a sliding metal bar and a strike plate. The strike plate is mounted to the door frame in such a way that the sliding metal bar or bolt can easily fit within the latch opening, thereby physically blocking the door from opening until the bolt is retracted.

While most deadbolt locks have a round bolt, some models incorporate a flat slide bar. In all cases, the bolt will have some sort of knob attached to or incorporated into the bolt design, allowing the user to grip the knob and slide the bolt into the hinge. In some cases, the bolt may rotate at the end of its slide to place the knob in the locked position or have some other safety measure in place to prevent the lock from being compromised.

Barrel bolts are available in many metal types to meet specific project needs. A lightweight brass latch could be an elegant yet moderately functional locking system for a kitchen cabinet or curio case. For situations that require a more robust and functional cylinder lock, such as fixing the front door of the house or the gate of an animal enclosure, a stainless steel cylinder bolt may be the more appropriate choice.

In addition to the various metals used to create barrel locks, barrel bolts also come in a variety of sizes. Some barrel bolt locking mechanisms are smaller and serve more of an aesthetic purpose than an actual functional purpose. These barrel bolts may have a total bolt length of less than 2 inches (about 5cm), and the bolt may have a diameter of 0.25 inches (about 6mm) or less.

When security is required, larger barrel bolts are used, including a tower lock. An example of this application is the use of a deadbolt lock to secure the front door of a home. With bolt lengths up to 8 inches (approximately 20 cm) and bolt diameters of 0.75 inches (approximately 18 mm) or more, these barrel bolts provide a robust yet low-cost security solution for applications where a system is not required locking with key or desirable.
