The top drive is a superior engine for oil drilling rigs, rotating the drill string and generating drilling motion. It is classified by purpose, size, motor type, and safe working load. The rotary table is an older option that requires additional equipment and manual work. Top drives are safer, more efficient, and require less maintenance, making changes to the mechanism faster and easier. They also offer greater flexibility and require less time to clear the ground.

An engine found atop many oil drilling rigs is the superior unit. Rotate the drill string, which is a piece of steel pipe, so that it can make the hole or hole you drilled. By rotating the mechanism on top of the rig, the drive generates the drilling motion.
The upper unit is located near the bottom of the oil rig tower. It hangs suspended from a hook on the rig tower so that it is able to move freely. The motor sits near the pivot point, a mechanism that further allows the drill string to rotate, and hangs just above the drill floor, or pad, which is where the drill string enters the ground.

The different types of top drive are classified according to their intended purpose, size, motor type, and safe working load (SWL), or maximum safe weight that a particular model can handle. A top drive motor is typically electronically or hydraulically powered. There may be one or more motors in the device, depending on power requirements. Land rigs have the smallest top drives, while offshore drilling requires the largest and most powerful models.

Another old mechanical option for hole drilling is the rotary table. One disadvantage of the rotary table is that it can only handle one-half to one-third the length of the drill string as top drive. Also, the rotary table cannot handle the rotational motion by itself and therefore needs additional equipment such as kelly bushings and a kelly bar. It also requires more manual work to work properly. For these reasons, it has been replaced by the top unit in many modern plants.

Better drives are also desirable because they are safer, primarily because they require less maintenance and therefore offer fewer opportunities for accidents. They also operate more efficiently, which reduces manpower requirements. The powerful top drive also stalls less frequently than the rotary table, further enhancing safety and efficiency.

Since head units require less equipment to operate, they also make it faster and safer to make changes to the mechanism. Thanks to their ability to handle more than one hose, they also offer greater flexibility. Shorter tube holders are easier to move in and out of the hole. They also require less time to clear the ground than the longer tubes used for rotary tables.
