Bicycle saddles come in various designs for comfort or weight-saving. They consist of an upper part made of synthetic materials or leather, mounted on metal rails attached to the seat post. Road cyclists prefer lightweight and narrow saddles, while mountain bikers choose wider and more padded ones. Performance saddles lack padding, but riders compensate by wearing cycling shorts with a chamois pad. A narrow saddle can be as comfortable as a wider one, preventing rubbing and chafing.

A bicycle saddle is the seat of the bicycle. It is mounted on a seatpost, which is a metal or carbon rod that slides into the main frame of the bike. There are many different cycling saddle designs out there: some are designed for extremely light weight, while others are designed primarily for comfort. Others are designed to find a happy medium between comfort and light weight. Some modern cycling saddle designs feature a cutout in the center of the saddle to relieve pressure on sensitive parts of the body while riding. The correct saddle will depend on rider preference and body shape.

The basic structure of a cycling saddle does not vary too much from one seat to another: the upper part of the saddle, on which the cyclist will sit, can be made of synthetic materials or leather, and is mounted on metal rails that are attached to the seat post. The upper material covers the padding, which provides support and comfort during a riding session. Traditional style saddles were made of leather that was often quite tough until the rider used the saddle for several hundred miles. The saddle needed to be treated with conditioner or saddle soap to soften the leather and preserve it. Today’s saddles may still be made of leather, but performance models are more often made of synthetic materials.

Road cyclists often choose extremely lightweight and narrow bicycle saddle models for weight savings and performance over comfort. Mountain bikers tend to choose saddles that are slightly wider and more padded for comfort on bumps and uneven terrain. A cycling saddle designed for recreational use can be very soft and padded, and much wider than performance models that reduce padding and width. Most recreational cyclists choose wider saddles with a significant amount of padding to provide a larger, more comfortable seating surface.

Riders using performance saddles that lack a significant amount of padding compensate for the hard saddle by wearing specially designed cycling shorts that feature a chamois pad on the seat. This pad provides some comfort while sitting on the narrow, hard saddle. Many people mistakenly believe that a narrow saddle can be extremely uncomfortable, but it can actually be just as comfortable, if not more comfortable, than one that is wider. The less surface there is on the saddle, the less contact there is with the skin, preventing rubbing and rubbing.
