What’s a bike hoist?

A bicycle hoist uses pulleys to lift a bike off the ground for storage. The system includes hooks that attach to the bike frame and a rope that is secured to an anchor. It is not recommended to use the hoist for lifting other objects.

A bicycle hoist is a device used to lift a bicycle off the ground for storage in a garage, shed, or other space. The system uses a rope that is hooked across two or more ceiling-mounted pulleys; two more pulleys are strung at two points along the rope or cable, and the hooks are attached to the frame of the pulley. These hooks can be used to attach the bike to the bike lift for lifting. Once the hooks are secured, the user can pull on the rope, effectively lifting the bike off the ground.

Once the bicycle has reached the desired height, the rope of the bicycle hoist must be secured, usually to an anchor mounted to a solid beam or other immovable object. Sometimes the rope can simply be tied around a beam or other object, while in most cases a specially designed anchor point is screwed into a wall to provide a stable tie down for the rope. Once strapped down, the bike will be suspended off the ground for more efficient storage; This is especially useful in tight garages or sheds where storage space is at a premium.

Bicycle lift system pulleys are mounted to the ceiling with screws or bolts. The plates supporting the pulleys are drilled to accept screws or bolts, and the pulley wheels are free to rotate on a shaft mounted through the plates. Most bike lift systems feature two ceiling-mounted pulleys and two additional pulleys attached to hooks that mount to the bike. This distributes the weight of the bike more effectively and makes lifting the bike much easier. It also allows free movement between the independent hooks, making the process of securing the bike to the hooks much easier.

While many owners choose to use the bike lift to lift items other than a bike, this is not advisable. The product is generally designed specifically for lifting a bicycle, and its use for other purposes may increase the risk of system failure. This means the pulleys can break, the rope can break, or the hooks can fail, causing the object to be lifted and fall to the ground, potentially causing injury or property damage. Other hoists are specially designed for other objects, such as canoe or kayak hoists and professional industrial hoists designed to lift exceptionally heavy items.
