A billy club is a non-lethal weapon used by law enforcement for defense and restrictive maneuvers. It has been in use for over a century and comes in various forms, including side-grip, folding, lead-weighted, and electroshock stun batons. The original wooden version was used by British policemen in the 19th century.

A billy club is a small, hand-held stick primarily used by law enforcement personnel as a defensive weapon. It is usually made of wood, plastic or metal and is not lethal. It can also be referred to as blackjack, nightstick, nightstick, or blackjack and has been in use for over a century. It is believed that this weapon was first called a billy club by the British in the early 19th century. Modern billy clubs include folding and side-grip versions as well as lead-weighted blackjacks and electroshock stun batons.

This mace is a blunt force instrument used to deliver blows and defend against attacks. It is also used for some restrictive maneuvers such as chokeholds. This weapon is not meant to be lethal, and most law enforcement organizations provide specific training in its use. Police officers are usually instructed to avoid using a club for blows to the head or other areas where vital organs are located. Even when reasonable caution is exercised, fatal injuries can sometimes occur.

The wooden batons carried by British policemen in the early 19th century were partly used to identify them as law enforcement officers. Each witness bore the official seal of the organization and was worn as a badge of legal authority. The baton has often been referred to as club billy by British citizens. This weapon was so effective that British law enforcement agencies continued to carry the plain wooden version well into the late 20th century. Several versions of this weapon are currently in use by law enforcement personnel.

The original version of this mace was made of wood and was the length of a person’s arm. Modern billy clubs usually vary only slightly from the original version in length and material. These variations typically include side-grip and folding versions.

The side grip version of this weapon features a short grip attached at right angles to the main shaft. Side-grip billy clubs are usually constructed of wood, plastic, or aluminum and come in fixed or folding versions. A folding billy club usually features two or more telescoping shafts within an outer shaft. Internal trees lock together to form a baton when expanded. A folding billy club is often made of steel or an aluminum alloy.

Another variation is a small lead weighted stick known as a blackjack. A blackjack usually consists of a leather-wrapped lead weight attached to the length of the coil spring. This weapon is typically very short and is intended to render a person unconscious by causing a concussion. Blackjacks are no longer used by many law enforcement agencies due to the possibility of fatal injuries.
An electroshock version of the billy club is widely used. Stun batons are designed to deliver an electric shock to an assailant through the tip. This modern variation of the billy club is intended to incapacitate a person from a short distance.
