Binders are devices used to fasten documents together and are commonly found in offices and schools. They come in manual and electric versions, with plastic comb binding being a popular choice for securing papers. Double loop wire is another option for a more professional look.

A binder is a device used to fasten documents together. It is a relatively common appliance used in offices and schools. Companies that offer copying services will likely also have binding machines available. Depending on the business, self-service binders may be available along with public use copiers.

The binding machines are available in both manual and electric versions. If you have only a few projects that require binding or the items to be bound are only a few pages long, a manual binding machine may be right for you. However, in a situation where you have a large volume of materials to bind or your projects are quite long, it makes more sense to choose an electric version.

Using a binder is relatively simple. Place a few sheets in the unit, left side up. If your machine is a manual type, pull down on a lever to punch holes in the paper. With an electric model, you press a pedal to perform the same action.

Once the holes have been punched in the paper, the next part of the procedure for using a binding machine is to secure the papers. A popular choice for this feature is to use plastic comb binding. This form of binding is inexpensive and reusable. Plastic comb binding involves punching 19 holes in a standard sheet of paper. Longer plastic comb binding spools are available for use with legal sized documents.

Plastic comb binding coils are available in different widths to hold up to 425 pages at a time. Once you’ve selected the right one for the job at hand, you place it on the binding machine and unfold the coils. The machine will hold them open while you place the punched holes on the spools. Once all of the pages are placed on the plastic comb binding spools, you use a lever to close the spools and your project is bound and ready to go.

When you want a more professional looking option for paper binding, you may want to consider using a double loop wire with your binding machine. This type of binding is available in a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio. This type of binding makes it easier for the bound document to lie flat, which can be desirable for manuals or cookbooks.
