A blind date is when two people who have never met before go on a date. It is usually initiated by someone who knows both parties. With the rise of online social sites, most blind dates are not entirely blind anymore. It’s important not to expect too much from blind dates and to approach them as an opportunity to meet someone new.
A blind date occurs when the two people going on the date meet for the first time. The word blind here does not mean that one or both of the people involved are visually impaired, but rather that no in-person encounter has previously occurred. In a normal first date, the two individuals have met at least once before and one of them asked out the other. In the case of blind dates, another person who knows both people helps initiate the date.
Today, most blind dates aren’t entirely blind per se, as thanks to online social sites like Facebook and MySpace, many people have photographs of themselves online that are easily accessible by others. Dates arranged through personals can still be blind if no photos or last names are exchanged. In this type of blind date, a phone call or two is often exchanged, as well as names before arranging to meet in a public place such as a cafe. The term blind date generally and traditionally implies not having set your sights on a person before dating him or her.
Commonly, a person who knows two single people who have never met before decides that there may be potential for a romantic relationship between them. She then she contacts them separately and mentions the other person and provides phone numbers and/or other information so the two can meet if both agree. However arranged, a blind date can be a great way to meet a new person that someone you know thinks might be a possible love interest for you.
The worst thing to do though is to expect too much from blind dates. Just because one person knows and loves two people guarantees nothing. The best way to approach a blind date situation is to simply think of it as an opportunity to meet someone new. A great way to open up a conversation on a blind date is to talk about the person who suggested the date. A discussion of how long and how each person knows that person can move the conversation to other topics.
