What’s a Blog Directory?

A blog directory categorizes and lists blogs by theme, helping users find blogs of interest. Unlike a search engine, it relies on navigation and categorization. Some directories are specialized and offer different listing options, including paid options. Many directories are highly automated, but some are human-edited. Blog directories can improve search engine ranking.

A blog directory is a specific type of web directory that focuses on listing blogs. Blogs, short for web logs, are a type of website that is commonly updated frequently, usually by an individual or a small group of individuals, and often listed as posts with the most recent posts first. Since there are literally millions of blogs in the world, a blog directory helps people sort them by interests and helps them find the type of blog they are looking for. A more advanced blog directory may include small human-edited reviews or descriptions, to further help users find what they are looking for.

Unlike a blog search engine, a blog directory doesn’t rely on keywords and a simple search. Rather, it is based on the concept of navigation and categorization. Blogs are placed in a blog directory based on what their main themes are and can be placed into one or more categories in a directory tree. The user then works his way through the directory tree and in each category or sub-category is able to see a list of all the blogs that have been entered into that category. Most directories also include a search engine, but this is a secondary feature.

The vast majority of directories are generalized, with categories that can theoretically cover any type of blog. However, there is a blog directory with a much narrower scope, such as one that only covers personal blogs or one that only covers business blogs. These often have a greater level of human editing put into them, as they are able to focus much more on their limited amount of listings.

Any blog directory can have a range of different listing options, sometimes depending on the nature of the blog being submitted. Some directories only offer free listings, where any user can submit their blog for listing. Others offer reciprocal directories, where a user can submit their blog for free in exchange for a link on their blog to the directory site. Others offer a paid listing option, often in combination with a free listing, which usually results in a faster review time and, in some cases, an improved listing. Some paid directories offer a position bid, where different sites bid on the blog directory for a higher listing position.

Many blog directories are highly automated, with users submitting their blogs for automatic inclusion or inclusion after a rudimentary employee review. Others are human-edited directories, which have a team of volunteer or paid employees who look at every blog submission. These workers then decide if the description is accurate, and if not, rewrite it to some extent and help place it in the best possible category or sub-category, if it is chosen for the list.
The blog directory is an important part of the modern blogging world, particularly due to its search engine relevancy. Many directories rank high in powerful search engines, due to the amount of inbound links, the relevancy of their content, and the fact that they are structured so tightly. As a result, an inbound link from a blog directory can help greatly improve your search engine position.
