A blog is a popular writing format that is used on personal and business websites to present archived material for future reference when new material is presented. A blog, short for weblog, can take the form of a log or diary, or simply be an ongoing series of thematically related articles or comments on topics of interest to the blogger. Blogger, developed by Pyra Labs, which was later acquired by Google, is free blogging software, and like many free blogging applications, the software is accessed by creating a Blogger account.

The first step in creating a Blogger account is to read and accept the Blogger terms of service (TOS), the list of rights, responsibilities and rules that a user assumes when registering for an account. It is also important, as per the Blogger Terms of Service, that you read and accept the Google Terms of Service, the Google Privacy Policy and the Blogger Content Policy.

The next step in creating a Blogger account may involve a choice. You can create a Google Account to use with Blogger and other Google services if you wish. Alternatively, you can use an existing Google account. No matter what the Google account has previously been associated with, such as Gmail®, Google® Groups or orkut®, a Blogger account can be used. The key is to think ahead about what services you want to associate with each site and if there are any that you want to keep separate. Reasons for doing this could be to make it easier to separate business communications from personal communications, for example.

If the aspiring blogger has a Google account, they can log in, using email as their username and appropriate password, and go straight to creating a blog. To create a Google account, you need to fill out a web form. The form requires an existing email address, a password, the blogger’s choice of a display name that will be used to sign off on blog posts, and the blogger’s date of birth. You may opt-in to receive blog information, including notification of new features and tips and tricks, and you must indicate that you agree to the terms of service and type a nonsense word as verification that a human, not a bot, is compiling the module. Pressing the ‘CONTINUE’ button will take you to a page for naming your blog and then choosing a template.
