A boot disk is used to start a computer and can be a CD, DVD, flash drive, or floppy disk. It contains an operating system and can be used for repairs, data recovery, and OS changes.

Starting or starting a computer means to start it, during which process the operating system is loaded into memory. This is typically done by pressing a button on the computer itself, at which point the computer boots from its internal hard drive. The term boot disk, also boot disk, is usually used to refer not to the built-in drive from which you normally start your computer but to a removable storage medium on which your operating system is stored and from which you can start your computer , if necessary. Because computers may be designed to boot from their own hard drive, they may require a particular keyboard instruction to boot from a startup disk.

A bootable disk can be any of several types of media, including a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, flash drive, external Firewire hard drive, or floppy disk. For the startup disk to work, it must contain an appropriate operating system for the computer. For example, you cannot start a Windows computer with a startup disk containing a Macintosh operating system.

Many computers come with a boot disk. One type is LiveCD or LiveDVD. Refers to an operating system version that works without needing to be installed. In addition, specialized boot disks are on sale.

A boot disk can have several functions, depending on what is installed on it, if anything, besides the operating system. A boot disk can be used when the computer cannot start from the internal hard drive or when the internal hard drive needs to be repaired. In this case, booting from an external source allows the user to run a disk repair utility, which may be able to repair the internal hard drive and allow it to restart. A boot disk can also be used in any data recovery attempt. Data recovery may be necessary if a computer’s hard drive fails, the computer is damaged, or for other reasons.
A boot disk is also the mechanism for making changes to the operating system. A boot disk can be used to perform the initial installation of an operating system on a computer. It can also be used to reinstall the operating system, which may be necessary if, for example, you need to securely erase data on the system before selling it or to rid your computer of a virus. It can also be used to replace an operating system, i.e. upgrade it to a newer version or downgrade it to an older version.
