What’s a brooch?

Brooches, also known as pins, have a long history in many cultures and have never gone out of style. The Romans made some of the first brooches, which were used to pin clothing together. Over time, brooches became more ornamental and are now available in a variety of styles, materials, and price ranges. While brooches were originally worn by both men and women, they are now primarily considered women’s jewelry. Brooches can be worn on clothing, in hair, or as pendants on necklaces. Scarf pins are a common use of brooches, and they can also be used as wedding accessories.

A brooch is a piece of jewelry, commonly called a pin, that has ancient traditions in many cultures. Archaeological excavations have uncovered beautiful brooches around the world dating back many millennia. They may have been constructed differently, but it’s fair to say that this is one type of jewelry that has never gone out of style. Today, people can wear small or large brooches attached to clothing or as pins in their hair. Some can even be worn on necklaces as pendants.

The Romans and other surrounding cultures made some of the first brooches, which may also be called a fibula. They were designed in the same style as safety pins and were useful for pinning clothing together. Some archaeologists date the pin even further and suggest that early cultures may have used materials such as spines or small pieces of rock as fasteners for clothing.

Over time, the craft of pin making advanced in numerous directions. The craftsmen of the Byzantine Empire painted and enameled brooches. Then other cultures added various designs or symbols that became popular. Although these pins were primarily practical in nature, the way jewelers developed them through the centuries made them more ornamental than necessary. In the 17th and 18th centuries, brooches were probably used more as an accent and embellishment, although they could be useful for holding garments together or hiding a place in clothing.

Today, the variety of brooches is quite astounding, and people looking for one will find them in numerous price ranges, sizes, materials, and styles. Some have precious or semi-precious stones, while others make excellent costume jewelry. Many clasps are made of metal, and most have a metal backing that features a hasp with a padlock. This pin helps to securely attach the brooch to clothing. In many styles, the pin is hinged so that it can be snapped open and closed for easier attachment, although this is not always the case.

Although the earliest brooches were worn by both men and women, in the Western world, it is now more common to consider the brooch as women’s jewelry. There are some exceptions, especially with things like pins. Most people who wear a brooch will wear it on the left or right side of the clothing near the shoulders. Some wear pins at the neck, as is common with cameos, or at the lower neckline of a garment in the center. Pins can also be beautiful wedding accessories and can be used on the back or front of a wedding dress, or to secure a veil.

Another common use of the brooch is to fasten scarves to clothing. Some pins, called scarf pins, have an open front that allows a person to pull the scarf through the pin. These can provide a secure grip for scarves that could otherwise easily slip or fall off.

One important thing to note is that the terms brooch and brooch are generally not the same. Broche can be defined as a verb that means to raise a topic. However, the common confusion in the two words now leads some dictionaries to define clasp as brooch as well. This is generally still considered inaccurate.
