What’s a Cartridge Filter?

[ad_1]

Cartridge filters remove sediments and solids from water and are used in various systems, from drinking water to swimming pools. They come in cylindrical or flat shapes and can be reused in some cases. They are also used for drinking water, but are not meant to be reused.

A cartridge filter is a filter that uses a barrier/sieve method to remove harmful sediments and solids from the water. Some of these filters are made to stop microscopic objects and some are made simply to keep major solids from entering a system. One of the cheapest and most versatile cleaning methods, these filters are used in everything from drinking water purification systems to fish aquariums and swimming pools.

The cartridge filter is usually a cylindrical object, although in some cases it may appear flat, much like an air filter. The shape of the filter depends more on its location. When placed in a pipe or filter housing, it will, by necessity, be cylindrical. Flat filters are commonly used for home aquarium systems.

In a swimming pool, the cartridge filter is usually contained in a housing close to the pump. In older systems, the pump and filter, at least for home pools, may as well have been placed in the same window. Since then, most filters have gotten more powerful, able to filter more material, but also requiring a larger space.

In many cases, the cartridge filter in a swimming pool can be reused. This can save you a significant amount of money. To clean the filter, it is usually sufficient to remove it from its housing and wash it out. In very rare cases, it may be possible to backwash the filter, which reverses the way water flows through the filter and therefore cleans it. The water is discharged through another pipe and flows into a sewer or other designated area. This is not usually done with cylindrical filters as it would only be minimally effective. Eventually, however, your pool filter will become old and brittle and need to be replaced.

Many prefer to use a cartridge filter when drinking tap water at home due to the number of additives often found in municipal water systems. Chlorine and other additives used to make water safe can also leave behind an undesirable taste. You can use a filter to remove some of these chemicals from your water, improving the taste.

Unlike swimming pool filters, most drinking water filters are not meant to be used more than once. Therefore, many may wish to keep spares on hand, as filters may only last a few months or less. Usually, the manufacturer will recommend a replacement schedule, although many owners can determine their own replacement schedule by considering taste and looking for other lees that may pass.
