A celebutante is a young woman who is expected to inherit a fortune and gains fame through media attention, often through misdeeds. They maintain a lifestyle of heavy spending and participate in reality shows to increase their fame and fortune. The term celebrity has been coined to define them, and they can endorse lines of cosmetics, clothing, or other products. Despite criticism and consequences such as rehab, they continue to seek fame.
The word celebutante is a cross between celebrity and debutante. A debutante is defined as a young woman, usually over 18, from a wealthy family. She is often introduced to the social scene through a debutante ball and is therefore considered eligible for offers of marriage. Today, the word debutante applies more commonly to young women who will inherit fortunes and less so to offers of marriage.
The curious combination that results in a celebutante can actually have several possible meanings. It usually applies to young women who are expected to inherit a fortune, like Paris Hilton or Nicole Richie who became celebrities because of their wealth, and not necessarily because of their talent. On the other hand, young actresses like Lindsay Lohan who have given great performances in the past and are sitting on handsome fortunes can also be considered a celebutante.
The celebutante is the party girl, the “it” girl, constant object of media attention. Marriage enters little into this equation, although many celebrities have married quickly and divorced quickly. Money is more important than class because the celebutante must maintain a lifestyle that celebrates heavy spending, appearing at covered paparazzi, red carpet events, and generally performing most of her life in front of the media.
Unlike the traditional debutante, the celebutante tends to derive more fame from misdeeds than from good ones. Partying to excess, having accidentally and/or intentionally released graphic home videos depicting sexual behavior, and leading public fights or feuds are all in keeping with the celebrity lifestyle. In addition, many of the most famous celebrities have a history of being arrested for drink driving (DUI).
Sometimes a celebutante will participate in reality shows, especially those that don’t have a definite talent like acting or singing. Attempts at acting and singing by those who get their money’s worth through inheritance are often met with tremendous scrutiny and criticism, some deserved, some not. However, since virtually anyone can be a reality show star, participating in a reality show is a legitimate means of gaining more fame, as well as increasing one’s fortune.
The term celebrity has been coined to define the celebutante and others who gain fame through participation in reality shows. Actors also often participate in reality shows to buy more time in front of the camera. Many actors have inspired a second career, or at least more fame through many of the reality shows that now employ actors. Examples include Celebrity Weight Loss, Dancing with the Stars and Breaking Bonaduce.
For the celebutante, shows are sometimes created. This is the case of The Simple Life by Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. With enough fame, the celebutante can endorse lines of cosmetics, clothing, or other products.
The life of the celebutante seems to be felt. Many are criticized and despised. In early 2007, Nicole Riche, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan entered rehab for drug, alcohol and/or eating disorders. Sadly these consequences tend not to deter continued efforts to raise the fame of these modern and exaggerated Holly Golightly figures, both instigated by celebrity agents, and by the paparazzi who seem obsessed with them.
