What’s a Chain Vise?

A chain vise is used to hold cylindrical items like pipes in place during cutting or welding. It must be made of high-strength materials to prevent breakage and ensure safety. Most are made of heat-treated steel or cast iron and must be able to withstand high pressure. Chains used in the vise must also be strong to prevent slippage or rotation. Workpieces should be thoroughly tested before use.

A chain vise is a device that uses a cranked winch system and high-strength chain to hold cylindrical items such as pipe in place while the pipe is being worked on. The purpose of this vise is to prevent movement during cutting or welding applications. These types of clamps are used in many pipe fabrication shops, where it may be necessary to apply several pieces of various lengths of pipe or where pipes need to be cut or even bent.

Every part of the chain vise, from the chain that binds the work piece to the handle used to tighten the vise, must be made of a high-strength material to ensure that the vise will not break during operation. Failure could not only cause damage to the workpiece, but could also cause a safety risk to the user operating the chain vise. If a piece of welded pipe falls from the chain vise while still hot, the operator could be seriously injured, regardless of the weight of the workpiece, which could be another safety issue.

Due to the high amount of torque and pressure that can be applied through the use of a chain vise, most of them are made from high tensile steel components. The steel components that make up a chain vise are often heat-treated steel or cast iron. This makes them sturdy and durable for heavy industrial use.

Components must be able to create the pressure needed to hold a round piece in place. They must also be able to remain in place with the high amounts of pressure exerted throughout the life of the workpiece. Such vises are not only required to hold the workpiece in place, but also hold it in place through various application processes including drilling, cutting, hammering, welding, or cutting pipe ends for use in threaded piping applications.

These clamp units are therefore required to hold a length of tubing as tightly as possible to allow for no slippage or rotation as pressure is applied. This means that the chains used in a chain vise must also be very strong. Workpieces held in chain vises should be thoroughly tested when engaged so that the user is confident that the workpiece is held in place in the process of the work being performed.
