Chowhound refers to a person who loves food, but can also imply gluttony. It should be used with caution to avoid offending someone. Synonyms include foodies and food fanatics. Food critics and journalists can also be considered chowhounds. Famous chowhounds in TV include Anthony Bourdain, Adam Richman, and Andrew Zimmern.

The term chowhound, which is also sometimes spelled “chow hound,” has two meanings that both refer to a person who is fond of food. One of the meanings specifically refers to a person who eats large quantities of food and is considered a glutton. The other meaning refers to a person who simply loves food, especially gourmet and exotic varieties and loves their food experiences. The latter meaning does not necessarily imply that the person eats or eats large quantities, but rather that he eats food of high quality and is particularly enjoyed from each meal.

Since the term can be used both in a positive way, referring to a person who is knowledgeable about food and knowledgeable in their culinary experiences, and in a negative way, as someone who overeats, it must be used carefully. If the term is used without caution, it may offend the person it is being used to describe. Synonyms for chowhound are foodies and food fanatics. These two terms are less commonly used with negative implications and can therefore be used without the same kind of caution that one should use with the chowhound.

A food critic can also be referred to as a chowhound. Since food critics are people who spend a lot of time sampling different types of food, researching culinary practices and innovative dishes, this term applies perfectly to them. The same goes for food journalists. Some food journalists have even made a name for themselves by traveling the world, documenting their culinary experiences abroad, and generally living the life of a chowhound.

Some people who have become famous chowhounds in the world of television are Anthony Bourdain, Adam Richman and Andrew Zimmern. Anthony Bourdain is best known for writing Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly and hosting the television show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. Bourdain’s show takes him all over the world for tastings and adventures. Adam Richman is the host of Man vs. Food, a show focused on the culinary delights the United States has to offer.

Like Bourdain, Andrew Zimmern often travels overseas to host his Bizarre Foods show with Andrew Zimmern. He focuses on trying some of the strangest dishes made on the planet. As such, Zimmern has made a name for himself as one of the boldest chowhounds in the world.
