Clip-on ties provide a solution for those who struggle with tying traditional knots. They are useful for less formal situations, and can be secured with a clip or pin. Some occupations require clip-on ties for safety reasons, but they may be stigmatized in the corporate world.

Tying a useful tie knot isn’t always easy, but many school and professional uniforms require a presentable collar. A popular solution to the tie knot dilemma is known as a clip-on tie. A clip-on tie presents a perfect four-in-hand knot or bow tie, but it doesn’t have to wrap around the neck or snug. Instead, a small metal clip is placed behind the knot on the front of the wearer’s dress shirt and fastens behind the top of the neckline.

A clip-on tie is especially useful for those who have difficulty mastering standard tie knots, such as the half Windsor, full Windsor, and Pratt knot. The four-in-hand knot is one of the easiest to learn, providing a presentable if somewhat informal knot and dimple. This is why the designers of the original clip-on ties selected the simpler knot design, as most clip-on tie wearers use them for less formal situations.

When the tabs of a clip-on tie are properly secured behind the wearer’s shirt collar and a tie clip or tie-pin is added for added security, a clip-on tie is nearly indistinguishable from its traditional cousin. Because there is no fabric around the wearer’s neck, the shirt collar may sit a little tighter, but that may be the only outward indication of a clip-on tie.

Some occupations require the use of clip ties for safety reasons. Police officers and emergency medical personnel wear clip-on ties to prevent accidental strangulation, for example. Factory managers who must visit the factory floor use clip-on ties to prevent a standard tether from becoming entangled in dangerous machinery.

Many parents enjoy the benefits of a clip-on tie when dressing younger children for school or other activities. A clip-on tie is not as restrictive as a traditional necktie, and does not present a hazard if worn during recess or PE class.

There can be a social stigma against regularly wearing a clip-on tie, especially in the white-collar corporate world. Mastering the art of tying a tie is considered by many to be a good skill to possess, which is why wearing a clip-on tie to the office is often seen as lazy or lacking in cultural appreciation. Clip-on ties are also considered limited in style compared to traditional ties.
