What’s a Coal Conveyor Belt?

Coal conveyors are industrial equipment used to move raw or processed coal through a facility. They consist of pulleys controlling a rubber belt or chain, and can be customised to meet specific needs. They are used in coal mines and power plants, and can be adjusted for speed and incline. Fire is a potential hazard, but can be prevented with detection and suppression systems.

A coal conveyor is an industrial piece of equipment typically used to move loads of raw or processed coal through a structure. Facilities can vary in layout and configuration, and a custom conveyor system usually needs to be installed to meet the specific needs of a location. Coal conveyor belt companies often work with other industrial equipment and components, such as bucket delivery systems. They can also install safety systems to protect workers and equipment from common hazards they may encounter along the conveyor line.

Conveyors consist of a series of pulleys that control a rubber belt, chain, and other materials. In a coal mine, workers can unload loads onto a conveyor belt for movement out of the facility and delivery to trucks or a processing area. The coal conveyor continuously transports raw coal and other components and can be faster and more efficient than transporting coal by wagon.

Coal-burning facilities, such as power plants, also use coal conveyor technology. In this case, the workers load the finished and processed coal onto a belt, ready for use. The belt draws it into the boiler, operating at a constant speed to keep the supply of fresh raw material constant. Boilers can require large volumes of coal to maintain satisfactory levels of energy production. The coal conveyor fills this need and reduces the risk of worker injury by keeping workers out of high-traffic and potentially dangerous areas.

Workers can adjust the level of incline on a coal conveyor, as well as the speed, to control the amount of coal being delivered. Complete shutdown of a functioning conveyor is typically rare, as such systems are often designed to operate around the clock with shifts of workers entering and exiting a facility to maintain a constant supply of coal. Some conveyors are mobile, allowing workers to relocate them when a facility’s needs change, such as when a strand of coal is depleted and miners need to relocate to a new location to take advantage of existing stores.

One potential problem with a coal conveyor belt is the risk of fire. Coal is flammable and coal dust deposits can pose a safety risk. Businesses can use heat detectors and other devices to check for signs of fire or conditions that could cause a fire if not addressed. Fire detection equipment can be connected to a suppression system to stop fires before they have the opportunity to spread along a production line, endangering equipment and workers.
